TomTom XXL and Thailand mapping - anyone used it?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

We are currently still in the UK but planning that my Thai wife and I will head to Thailand for good in around 18 months time.

We have a newish TomTom XXL here in the UK which although a bit slow to find satellites and having an annoying time lag when driving is actually pretty good. I see that Thailand maps which didn't used to be available are now available for £25.

I don't want to buy Garmin, I don't like them in the UK and in any event the TomTom is new.

Has anyone used TomTom in the car in Thailand?

What are your feelings? We are just planning ahead is all.

We are going to need something. Last time my Sister in Law navigated doing 3 or 4 U-turns in the same piece of road on several occasions, (we managed to stop outside the same dress shop in Ayuthaya several times too. she swears that was an accident!!) She has a hopeless sense of direction and we go a very circuitous route going anywhere.

I also have an XXL and drive a lot around Thailand.

The maps overall are very good and have so far taken me from one side of Thailand to the other with no problems. Very occasionally the map will try to take you down an unpaved road but if it is left set to Fastest Route there should be no problems.

My only criticism is that it is very hard to input destinations because the English spelling does not match the real Thai names. Browsing the map in the area you want to go and then setting a destination is the best way. Of course once there you set it as a favorite then can return any time.

Thanks for that Chris. Presumably the mapping is all in English then including the address input language so your Thai wife cannot help? I can see how that might be problematic.

So how do you input street names and numbers then? Or an address? My wife's family home is, it appears designated by the canal number nearby, Klong Song which apparently means canal number two, then by the house number, which appears to be one of many of the same number on that road in her case so that number is slash followed by a number indicating the village on that before road or how many of the same number before hers, then by the village name, the larger area and then a postal code.

My wife is sitting beside me trying to explain - I fear all is lost LOL. Or does it work like in the UK? Put in a post code and try and choose a road that seems to fit the bill?

I use it too, quite often. Same remarks as Chris.

You can also input the coordinates of the place you want to go. Look them up using google earth.

My cards are 5 yrs old but still ok to use.

Goodluck
