Positive experience with Turp surery for enlarged prostrate

I have been on medication for an enlarged prostrate for many years and at some point the mediciine doesn't work well. I have been thinking about having a turp surgery for the last few years but my doctor advised me to wait, as long as the medicine works. To make a long story short I had a bad case of urinary retension so had the surgery three and a half months ago

As far as surgery goes there is very little pain and some discomfort the first week but quite mild. If you find a doctor with a high skill as I have you will have excellent results and little or no side effects. Something my doctor told me is that they have different calibers of cable they use and in my case he used the smallest caliber which took much more time and skill and he said it was more difficult for him but left me with no side effects.

The biggest problem that I have now is getting used to normal. I would say it's the best thing that has happened to me and as most men I know who had it ask, why I waited so long. It's not a cure as the prostrate will grow back in 5 to 10 years but if you continue to take your medication post surgery you can prolong it as I am doing now.

I would highly recommend this surgery if like me you are on the borderline with the medicine.I would be happy to give anyone more details and recommendations.

It is great that the surgery has worked out for you... Sounds like you got a good surgeon.

As for me I never got to the point of having to have surgery even though I have had prostatic hypertrophy for 30 years or more. I found out about 14 years ago that a Saw Palmetto Extract works well. Notice I say 'extract' as it must be a concentrated form... the ground up berries do no good. Anyway I take several times the daily recommended dosage without side effects. I usually take 2-3 320 mg gel caps of Sametto in the morning and again at bed time. It works great. As said - no side effects ... Before I was taking a Saw Palmetto Complex (also in the extract form) from Costco when in the USA. Sametto can be found here in Thailand. Most people who say that Saw Palmetto does not work do not take the Extract and/or take the small recommended dosage.

I get great relief - almost normal daily routine and nightly sleeping. I barely notice the problem when I have adequate supplies of the Saw Palmetto extract on hand.

I hope both your experience and mine help other guys who become plagued with the problem.

I am 70 years old and I had the same experience, the same surgery, the same problems, before and after. Everything disappears after taking a Thai herbal supplement called Pueraria Mirifica / Butea Superba for the last 2 years. Search on the Internet and e-mail me for more details and advise.

I am pleased that saw palmetto works for you, but it does not work for me. Not that I followed exactly the same regimen as you. Rather, I took mega-doses of beta-sitosterol, the supposedly active constituent of saw palmetto. In my case it made no difference. Of course, not all herbal supplements or pharmaceuticals will work well for all people. And we cannot jump to conclusions because one person has a successful or unsuccessful experience with a herb or drug.

This why it is helpful to turn to research which pools data from a large number of people, controls for possibly confounding effects, and only then offers conclusions. For saw palmetto, see http://summaries.cochrane.org/CD001423/PROSTATE_serenoa-repens-for-benign-prostatic-hyperplasia. This review from a highly reputable organisation suggests saw palmetto is no better than a placebo. It is worth exploring this site (The Cochrane Collaboration) for a range of studies on various treatment options for prostate problems. The negative Cochrane review does not mean that a substance cannot work for one person (as it seems to for JDGRUEN). If something works for you, go for it. But the negative review does mean that saw palmetto does not work for most people.

Research is an important tool in making decisions about whether to invest time and money into the limitless number of possible treatments for ailments such as BPH. The wonder of the web allows all of us easy access to information. But not all information is equal - anyone can put anything on the web. This is why it is advisable to access organisations such as Cochrane for information - or other organisations that follow established research protocols, and have no vested interests in promoting particular products or practices.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I will have to do something else besides take medications within a year or so. Is it possible for you to tell me your Doctors name on this forum? If not, is there some other way that I could find it.

Thank you

Is there some way to determine which urologists have extensive experience with the TURP procedure and which ones have very little? It doesn’t seem feasible to go around and ask them all.

Thanks

any urologist who has practised long will have done many TURPs. But what you want is one experienced in nerve- sparing techniques. Look at the cvs on the websites of the main large private hospitals for someone trained in the west and preferrably young i.e residency/fellowship was post 2000. Also look for special interest in nerve sparing surgery. Can also google this plud Thailand for docs who have published on the subject.
