Yeah, right. Like thats gunna happen in Thailand... Not! And of course if you require a licence, accidents won't happen because having a licence means you'll be sober and intelligent. Licensing laws, even back in the Australian paradise, haven't eliminated road or boating accidents, have they?
Krigern
The best way to avoid accidents is to put a limit of HP on rentals...Giving a 215 hp (70 knots) to a first-timer is madness...

How about all the peoples renting the big bikes here, you think they check if they have license to drive them? It's all about the money ... Gandtee
I don't know about licenses for jet skis, but I think anyone hiring one of those things in Pattaya needs certifying. Ignorance is bliss. R.I.P.

Didn't know there were jet ski licences.. Under the Thai 1913 Navigation act. which is still current today, all vessels, including jet-skis, need to be registered with the Harbor Department. A person driving a jet-ski must hold at least a Helmsman Level 2 license, a qualification that requires two years’ documented proof of experience aboard a Thai-flagged ship. Without this, one is not legally licensed to ride a jetski in Thai waters. Edited March 21, 2014 by Dave 74
slipperylobster
Seems to be a trend. Last month, it was another British Man with no skills ....crashing into speedboats...now this. Please control yourself on these things. I do not now if they do water sports at all in England...but it would be a good idea to take some basic safety course...and learn how the things operate.....common sense...slow it down if you have no idea what you are doing. Licenses aren't going to help. Look at all the licensed drivers crashing cars and motorcycles. The real necessity is for clear marking with buoys of areas that are off limits for jet skiis and any other kind of motorized launch; where the jet ski driver, swimmers, divers, etc. are kept apart from each other. Not perfect, but a step in the right direction.

Enforce that and you will be able to pick up one of these helmsman whatevers on Walking Street for 200 baht...or, sit down, have a beer, and the jet ski operator will go fetch it for you for 300 baht. The Thai word for license is taloak.

Oh, they do water sports all the time in England without any license required and, apart from leaving a bad taste in the mouth, the only mishap is that sometimes the cameraman gets a bit wet.

ZigZagMan
Thankfully all the jet skis are registered, have weekly inspections and are insured. I know that because the deputy mayor said it.
sabaii69
Seems hitting anchor ropes is a frequent thing here. By the way, it is not appropriate to talk about dog licenses here in reference to this tragedy. No common sense, Mate?
