A tragedy and the people hiring out these machines should ensure that the customer is licenced to ride one.

Didn't know there were jet ski licences..

Maybe they don't have them here, in Australia you must be licenced.

Seems to be a trend. Last month, it was another British Man with no skills ....crashing into speedboats...now this. Please control yourself on these things. I do not now if they do water sports at all in England...but it would be a good idea to take some basic safety course...and learn how the things operate.....common sense...slow it down if you have no idea what you are doing.

Yeah, right. Like thats gunna happen in Thailand... Not!

And of course if you require a licence, accidents won't happen because having a licence means you'll be sober and intelligent. Licensing laws, even back in the Australian paradise, haven't eliminated road or boating accidents, have they?

Obviously, you can't eliminate stupidity or recklessness, it will surface anywhere. In Thailand it flourishes due to the "laissez-faire" environment encouraged by all, including law enforcement..

Licenses aren't going to help. Look at all the licensed drivers crashing cars and motorcycles.

The real necessity is for clear marking with buoys of areas that are off limits for jet skiis and any other kind of motorized launch; where the jet ski driver, swimmers, divers, etc. are kept apart from each other. Not perfect, but a step in the right direction.

Under the Thai 1913 Navigation act. which is still current today, all vessels, including jet-skis, need to be registered with the Harbor Department. A person driving a jet-ski must hold at least a Helmsman Level 2 license, a qualification that requires two years’ documented proof of experience aboard a Thai-flagged ship.

Without this, one is not legally licensed to ride a jetski in Thai waters.

Enforce that and you will be able to pick up one of these helmsman whatevers on Walking Street for 200 baht...or, sit down, have a beer, and the jet ski operator will go fetch it for you for 300 baht. The Thai word for license is taloak.

It flourishes because of the infallibility of the amulet.

Oh, they do water sports all the time in England without any license required and, apart from leaving a bad taste in the mouth, the only mishap is that sometimes the cameraman gets a bit wet.

How would they do that? Is there a process to obtain a jet-ski licence?

Got one right here, 200 baht and it's yours. Yeh, okay, it is supposed to be in Thai, alright? What do you mean it looks like a pizza flyer?

How about all the peoples renting the big bikes here, you think they check if they have license to drive them?

It's all about the money ...

Ya' think?

RIP poor fella. 1st time I rode one I crashed head on with a mate. Gotta take it slow on those things especially when you have obstacles in close proximity.
