Court asked to terminate Bangkok governor’s duties

BANGKOK, March 25 – The Election Commission (EC) has petitioned the Court of Appeals, seeking a ruling to invalidate the governorship of Bangkok governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra.

Five EC members signed the petition, asking the court to call a new gubernatorial election after deciding to give a "yellow card" to Mr Sukhumbhand.

A candidate who won the election but receives a "yellow card" is subject to relinquish the position but allowed to re-contest in a new election.

The deadline for the EC to bring the case with the court is tomorrow – one year after Mr Sukhumbhan was elected.

The EC voted 3:2 on March 11 to give a "yellow card" to Sukhumbhand for violating Thailand's election law after his supporters slandered his opponent during the election campaigns.

In case the court accepts the case for consideration, Mr Sukhumbhand is required to stop performing his duty until a verdict is given. One of the deputy governors will temporarily replace him.

If Mr Sukhumbhand is found guilty as charged by the EC, a new gubernatorial election must be held in 60 days after the court’s ruling. (MCOT online news)

Considering some of the other candidates, and Karun Hosakul comes to mind, that would be pretty hard.

Governor Sukhumbhand announces that he will be "caretaker governor", disregard any court rulings against him, and campaign endlessly, using taxpayer funds.

Seems a bit harsh... Person A and Person B stand for election, put themselves before the electorate.

Person C say slanderous things about Person B to make Person A look better... Person A wins the election but gets dismissed because of what Person C says.

Surely the charge should be against Person C? That would seem more logical and appropriate.

But hey ho, thats the yellow-bisased EC for you, always gunning for the Red side and letting off the Non-Red/Yellow side... right?

I like Mr. Sukhumbhand, he just looks like the kind of guy who could be easily led. Could do worse than electing him as a relatively neutral PM. The Dems don't particularly support him, and i doubt the PTP do either!

I think he is pretty trustworthy to be fair, if he would be allowed to do his job unhindered.

Yes!!! But he is simply a sacrificial lamb so that they can kill a few of the bigger 'red' fish and evade criticism for being biased!!
