rubl
Just curious, was this an army checkpoint as in manned with soldiers wearing 'red cross' marks similar to the ones I daily see along Silom / RamaIV?
bigbamboo
Well This is something I would never believe could happen. FOOLS, now if you want to lose everything that the PM PTP stand for carry on because you reds are in for a bloody nose, Brain is needed to be turned on when you wake a sleeping giant. You will be hunted down to the far corners of Issan, do you not realize the biggest army barracks are all over ISSAN. Do you not realise that many soldiers in Isan are likely to refuse to fight against the reds if push comes to shove?Look at the army's choice of units to suppress the 2010 crackdown. Look at how Prayuth has not launched a coup yet despite clearly wanting to. Sent from my IS11T using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app They will follow orders and if Prayuth wanted a coup it would have already happened. Sent from my iPad using Thaivisa Connect Thailand I thought Prayuth got his instructions from the ammart just like the police get theirs from Mr T. If you think the percent of cry offs would make any difference your mistaken. The crackdown should have been the police. How do YOU know K.Prayuth clearly wants a coup ??? Time is Thailands friend, The courts etc.---But the reds are stupid if they think they can intimidate the Prayuths army. A bigger army just means more potential defectors. To answer your last point, the general has had a few slips of the tongue recently. How obvious does it need to be, does he actually need to come out and give dates and times? Saying that "the door is neither open nor closed" is a pretty clear indicator of his hopes, especially given that he took part in the last one. Popular Post cnxdefyer
It was right for the army to back down on this first incident. Now they wait, if there is an attack on that location, they will have a reason to defend a check point with force. Just imagine what the story would have been if the army defended the check point? The red would be screaming that the army attacked unarmed protesters. What little faith I have left, I'll save for the Army, it's obvious the politician can't solve anything and the police can't enforce the law, what is left?

Popular Post djjamie
With March 29 being "D day" for yingluck to defend herself we can expect to see a lot more tactical terrorist movement within Bangkok over the coming 4 days. Nattawut, Jatuporn and Ko Tee (the terrorists version of the 3 stooges). It cannot be understated that the UDD stance has focused in on independent agencies that will feel the wrath of the PTP terrorist wings extremely violent practices in the future. This OP highlights a prelude of things to come. The terrorists are setting the stage so to speak. It is these same terrorists that burnt coffins and threw feaces at the court only days earlier so to join the dots here does not need more than a second grade education and Maj Gen Wara Boonyasit is well aware that when these dots are joined it spells blood, terror, disrespect of the rule of law and anarchy. (All terrorist comfort words) It is nice to see the army restrain themselves for this latest blatant attempt by the terrorists to set up their "front lines" , but rest assured if they have free rain like they did in 2010 then this situation will rupture in spectacular fashion. The army need to show restraint yet must not let the terrorist disrespect the rule of law and certainly not let them hold Bangkok hostage lest Jatuporn get his wish of "The sky will be red, red with blood" Trying times ahead. The law, the army and 15 principles of democracy vs the terrorists and 1 principle of democracy. One cannot help but hear the silence from yinluck today and this will be replicated in the coming days with not a word to denounce the developments that will drive Thailand to a bloody future. The international community will not judge yingluck on what she said. They will judge her on what she didn't say. Popular Post h90
What a pathetic useless bunch No I doubt that. Most probably it was well planed by the reds, with plenty of cameras and a bunch of grandmas ready. As soon as the army would have fought back the grandmas would be on the front, all filmed and with the right cut it, they would spin it into: Peaceful elderly women demonstrate for democracy, the army is beating them are shooting at them. Wouldn't be difficult to have someone shoot a few army guys and wait till the shoot back for the camera and surely some bystander will be hit. Win the checkpoint at the costs of a total defeat in the mass media around the world isn't a good idea. I have the feeling now Thaksin really wants the army staging a coup so Thaksin and Yingluck are the heroic fighter for democracy and not the corrupt politician....

Popular Post Scamper
The UDD has crossed the line - for all to see - the country, and the international community. This was a clearly provocative act, and a test of the army's resolve. As such, the very last thing the army should do is to recede out of the picture. Because this tactic has succeeded, it will clearly be tried again, and more forcefully. The fact that this checkpoint was the one guarding the NACC is very, very key, and very symbolic, because that is the UDD's prime target. They want that investigation stopped, and if Yingluck is ever impeached, they will be going after the NACC. The army has a duty to protect the independent agencies. It is very, very hard to believe that Prayuth will allow this to carry on. One thing is clear, though. At some point, the army will push back, and they will prevail. Surely the UDD must know that. The action of the UDD is shocking and without precedent, and in terms of the security of the court, profoundly disturbing, especially in light of the rhetoric used in recent UDD rallies. The UDD cannot be allowed to dismantle the protection of the courts. They must be protected, as the constitution demands that they be protected.

Its just a check point, not a military base... no need to defend it with guns. The Military did the right thing, retreat and let them take it, its not a strategic value point and not worth spilling blood over it

thesetat2013
Attack a building or an area is terrorism. Attacking a military installation or outpost is an act of WAR. Since YL has not spoken out against this act as defence minister it must mean she doesn't care or possibly supports the REDS actions. Mackie
And some 'intellectual heavyweights' continually criticize Thai army for being heavy handed. Get some perspective. NO. time will tell the PM is supposed to be in control of the PTP. if she cannot rein in these nutters then she will have more problems than she has already. unless these reds back off, street fights on a massive scale. Popular Post MGP
This is very sad. Thanks to the checkpoints of the unarmed Royal Thai Army, the street where I live (close to Makhawan Bridge) is a safer place to be. Not 100% free of attacks, but at least the coward terrorist are not attacking during the day. They are providing a security to the citizens that the Police is not offering, they are very kind with the neighbours (and vice-versa), and they are also equipped with emergency medical aid support. Popular Post Bocking
I suspect the Army did exactly the right thing. I also suspect that the UDD might see this as an act of weakness, but they'd do well not to keep on pushing. The Army clearly wants to avoid a military coup, but that doesn't mean they're not politically savvy or toothless. Actions such as this, along with the viral videos of cheering the murder of innocent children, mobs beating up a defenceless monk and calling for gunfire to ring-out in Bangkok are gradually changing opinion. If the leaders of UDD do stand up to fight, they'll look over their shoulders and see that nobody is standing behind them.

sweatalot
" As a result, the Army had to relocate the checkpoint from the spot" An useless police force and an army that let their bunkers be overrun by Redshirt terrorists, and this we pay taxes for! How many unarmed soldiers do you think would have been at the check point ? 4 or 5 at the most. How do you expect them to stop a mob of red thugs who turn up ? They were right to move away and let the thugs have the bunker, if they hadn't they would have undoubtedly been beaten up and possibly killed. These types have already shown they are ready to bash anyone who they think might oppose them, even monks. This is just another provocation in Thaksins desperate moves to get the army to stage a coup. they have radio and should be prepared for assaults of the terrorists. Are they not allowed to fire in self defense? Do they not have automatic weapons? I guess they are confiscated now edited for typo correction Edited March 26, 2014 by sweatalot
