People who have dogs as mentioned in this topic suffer many personality issues and live their lives in fear.

But they claim its just common sense to keep dogs like that in order to prevent a burglary.

Yes, i have had a burglary in my house years ago. When they apprehended the thief the police told my wife that he carried a gun. We were in the house and all in the bathroom bathing our son and ourselves. He came into the bedroom whilst we were in the ensuite bathroom. So we got lucky. It happened at 8 pm. Note to say that it was in a gated community snd other houses got burgled as well.

Dogs are just one method of security in the home or guarding B-52 bombers.

Military and police forces all around the world use dogs for security. World leaders and royalty all over the world own dogs.

You might want to read, "The Health and Psychological Benefits of Bonding with a Pet Dog."

Thailand used to host hundreds of US warplanes. Worth billions of dollars. What did they use to guard them? Dogs. Yup - dogs, dogs dogs. If you want security and peace of mind get a dog.

American Journal of Cardiology, researchers followed more than 400 patients after they were released from the hospital after having a heart attack. One year later the pet owners had a significantly higher survival rate than non-pet owners.

Thanks for proving my point.

And what point would that be? You have had a hard time in Thailand and don't like dogs?

Pet Ownership and Cardiovascular Risk -- A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association, 09 MAY 2013

Pet Ownership and Survival in People Without Established CVD

Pages 3-4

There are scant data on pet ownership and survival in people without established CVD. Analysis of data from a large national health survey (published in an open-access journal) did not find a survival advantage associated with pet ownership. Likewise, analysis of data from the NHANES II, a longitudinal cohort study, did not find pet ownership was associated with reduced overall mortality.

BTW I am sure when the dogs were guarding the B-52s that the military folk warned all the kids playing around the warships to be careful of the dogs because these dogs will bite.

I read your reply. I think you don't like dogs. Thailand is not a good place to be if you don't like dogs.

It never was. Your dislike of dogs has colored your mind and you are unable to think clearly about the topic which is home safety and burglary.

Dogs are one method used by home owners and generals alike. The homeowners protect homes and the generals protected B-52 bombers in Thailand.

Too bad you have let your prejudice get in the way of clear thought. Which is better dogs or guards?

Dogs or alarm systems? They all have their place. I don't think dogs in a bank would work very well.

However I do question the response time of the police to a burglar alarm system.

Dogs and sanity are a different subject but there are a thousand studies online that vouch for the benefits of dogs on human mental health. Dogs in nursing homes and dogs with wounded/handicapped soldiers.

And of course dogs for the blind. The blind have special security needs.

My dog looks a lot like the dog in the stamp below. I rescued her from a litter of puppies born in a ditch.

No person who is blind and who uses a guide dog ever had to warn a kid to be careful of the dog or else it will bite.

I was trying to tell you something. I'll try again. Dogs are one method of security. Maybe used alone or in conjunction with other methods. Like anything they have pluses and minuses. I have to walk my dog twice a day and play with her twice a day. A guard goes to sleep at night and my dog goes to sleep at night. The guard will sleep through a robbery my dog will wake at the slightest sound.

The photo below is a guard dog training. It will be a dangerous dog. I have many things in my house that are also dangerous.

But like any dangerous thing it must be used with caution. My dog has saved me from serious bodily harm on a number of occasions.

I tell the neighborhood kids she is not a friendly dog and she never runs loose.

So...since nobody answered my earlier question I guess nobody has a burglar alarm here?

You just have to google. There is a long Thai Visa thread about them. As I remember they are only as good as the response time of the local police.

LOL, what the hell are you talking about? That's one of the funniest things I've read in a while. :)

I was wondering whether anybody posting on this thread had found them to be effective. I live in a moo baan so I would hope my neighbours might take notice if my alarm went off, I wasn't really thinking about the police.

Sorry, I missed your post. That doesn't sound very useful then. I guess it's back to the original plan of broken glass topped walls and razor wire inside.

Sorry. It did not specify whether you were in Thailand when it happened. Lived in Hollywood. Packed my large van in the middle of the day in my driveway for a weekend camping trip. If you just drove by, you could see that I was leaving for the weekend. Stupid of me. They stole everything of value at night. Used the bedspreads from all of the beds to carry it all, plus the TV's.

Stupid of you? where else could you have packed your van?

And when you read instances of a dog mauling a child many times it was because a dog that 'never gets loose' somehow or other managed to get loose.

Like I said before you are letting your personal fears decide what you post. Would you stop using electric lights because sometimes people get electrocuted? Do you want me to post Thai news stories about accidental electrocutions in Thailand? Would you stop driving a car because sometimes people get killed in car accidents? Would you stop flying in airplanes because sometimes they get hijacked or crash? I could post an new article about a famous guy who got killed by his toothbrush.

Grow up.

Just what is it about your life here in Thailand that requires that you have a dog that should it ever get loose could seriously hurt a child? Do you store B-52's in your back yard?

Dogs guard things that are valuable. Like my life and my possessions. I used to watch dogs guard B-52's and they did a better job than the folks who tried to blow them up.

Motorcycles hurt far more children in Thailand than dogs do. Should we not have motorcycles?

I cook with a gas burner. The burner could burn a child. Should not use cooking gas?

Your life and your possessions? I was waiting for that one. Have a nice day.

Well I am certainly not concerned about the burglar's life and his possessions. Nor is my dog. smile.png

Why would anyone care?

You need to make your own arrangements, pay people to look after your stuff.

Or just accept you can't control everything in life and write off the occasional theft.

I think it;s just nuts that people take extreme measures involving violence, it's STUFF f f s, just not that important!

Australian tourist killed in robbery in Thailand's Phuket island. Robbed for stuff.

And/or the following story about a robbery of stuff.

I had someone pry open the locked front door. I heard it and came running down the stairs with a butcher's knife (yes, I keep a butcher's knife at hand) and they ran away. Didn't report it to the police, because the police are right around the corner and I wasn't sure if they were involved or not. A neighbor had an attempt on his house about the same time and he said it was the village's security guards.

TLT: are you OK? Seriously? If you need to talk you can PM me.

I've been robbed 4 times in Thailand (never at home) and 5 times in the West 2 at home and 3 at work. In Thailand I was thrown out of a moving truck. Just stuff, my a**.

My house has been visited by burglars back in 2011 during the flood. Because access to or house became more and more difficult, we decided to leave home and stay upcountry for some time. When we came home, we notices a broken window in the upper floor and in the master bedroom the burglars had stolen many objects with a value of several 100 of thousands of baht.

We called the police and one policeman showed up, took some photos, asked us to make an itemized list of the stolen objects and report to the police station.

We did that the following day. The officer assured us that this case was important to him and he would do what he could.

One of the stolen items was a set of keys to one of my cars, which fortunately was not there at that time. I had to reprogram the key system to disable that stolen key.

About a week later, we received a phone call from someone claiming to be a security guard at the nearby Tesco Lotus. He said he had arrested a man who had several obviously stolen objects in his possession including a business card of me, hence the call. He asked us to come right away and identify the objects.

My wife and I went there and when we arrived, called the guard to tell him we were there. But he did not show up. So we went inside and asked for the guard in charge. He came but obviously had no clue what we were talking about. Also the phone number we had, was not his. We called that number a couple of times, but no answer anymore.

Then it dawned on me: The caller was the burglar trying to make me drive near him with the car, the keys to which he had stolen so he could take the car and drive away. Luckily we had not used that car.

Next day we went to the police station trying to report the incident, hoping the phone number would help to locate the burglars. But the police had no record of any burglary to our home and no file could be located.

That was the police station in Rom Klao.

Do I feel unsafe now?

No. We changed all windows and window frames to make it a lot more difficult to break in. We changed doors to massive teak wood doors with solid locks.

We discussed installing CCTV but after the experience with the local police thought that this was just wasted money. They couldn't care less.

Perhaps I should note that I live in a Moo Baan with plenty of security, admission checkpoint, CCTV, guards at all intersections, etc.

You seem to attract a lot of bad karma into your life, my condolences.

I prefer to, and think that I do, avoid such trouble, and don't own anything I'd be too upset about losing.

And I am very diligent about avoiding any and all violence in my life.

Maybe I'm just lucky. . .

Once upon a time people paid for things in cash and the manager of the business made daily cash deposits in the bank. Big companies use armored trucks us small guys wore bullet proof vests and carried guns.

I had more trouble with false alarms at work than any of the robberies. One time the thieves threw a rock through the front window which set off the alarm, stole the cash register and left 20 minutes before the cops showed up. It cost me a new picture window and new cash register.

Another time the alarm company called me before they called the cops and I hit the parking lot of my business shooting. I killed a car before the cops arrived to tell me it was a false alarm. I've killed two cars in my life. I don't feel too guilty about it. Not like it keeps me awake at night.

My wife has a shop and she has her son sleep inside of a night. We also have two dogs which stay at the shop overnight. The son is not scary at all but the dogs are another story. During the day they lounge around i the shade and barely notice the customers but once the gates are locked they change and bristle up at every passer-by. The other day during opening hours they took exception to one passer by and we had to call them off. My wife said "he bad person he just out of jail; he steal he kill'. The dogs seemed to know this person was undesirable without any prompts from us.

Although I agree with the poster who says "it is only stuff" and I have told my stepson if any burglars get passed the dogs give them whatever they want. If I had my way I would not put him in harms way to begin with but my wife insists and as its her shop and her son. As a postscript, we have never been burgled in Thailand and I think it is because of the dogs.
