Dry weekend again as Thais vote for senate Sunday

PATTAYA:--Another dry weekend is on tap for Pattaya as Thais go to the polls again to vote for a new senate.

Sales of alcohol will be prohibited from 6 p.m. Saturday. March 29 through midnight Sunday, March 30, with virtually all bars and entertainment venues shuttered.

About 95,000 Pattaya residents were registered to go to the polls last weekend - another alcohol-free event - for early voting, but the turnout was scant with some of the polling stations seeing no visitors at all.

Vying for a single senate seat in Sunday’s polls, are Saengsorn Sunthornsilpachai, 62, a public administration graduate; Kampol Tangekachai, 43, a Ph.D. in business administration; Somchai Pattanaanek, 58, a medical graduate; former police Maj. Col. Banthit Khunajak, 63; and Vichai Jullawanitpong, 52, a Mahidol University medical graduate.

The foreigner bars are to be shut.

But why ?

I accept if one had a drink the night before one votes it may cause one to tick the wrong box, but we foreigners are not allowed to vote.

Yeah, the ban is ridiculous. Anyway it doesn't work. Who wants to drink will drink no matter what. The local vendors sell the booze anytime. If not in the bar, you can buy a drink from local vendors and have a drink at home. I get really frustrated when I have a meal in a restaurant and they tell me cannot sell alcohol because of the wrong time or elections. At 13:59 it's OK to have a drink, at 14:01 it's not OK. ?W.T.F? Really? I'm having a meal in a restaurant for F. sake and it is not cheap! How ridiculous these rules are, I still can't comprehend the logic of it even if I've been living in Thailand for 10 years now.

AS I walked along Jomtien Beach on Saturday evening all the bars and restaurants were open and selling beer openly, as they were last weekend

What I can't understand is that voting finished at 3pm so why keep the bars shut till midnight ??
