ANTI-GOVERNMENT CAMPAIGN
Funeral held for slain STR guard

BANGKOK: -- THE RELATIVES of an anti-government campaign guard who was shot dead retrieved his body from a hospital yesterday and escorted it in a small parade to a packed funeral at Wat Sommanas Rajavaravihara.

Wasan Khamwong was shot on Tuesday in an attack on a convoy of vehicles carrying members of the Students and People's Network for Thailand's Reform (STR) as it travelled on an expressway in Nonthaburi province. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

A sister of Wasan, Praphaphorn Korpoo, said Wasan last contacted her on Monday. She described him as a patriot and a loyalist.

"I am proud of him for dying in service of the country, and those he leaves behind should be proud of him too," she said.

Wasan recently quit his career as an Army recruiter based in Buri Ram, before joining the STR as a volunteer guard.

Earlier, Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva mourned Wasan and expressed condolences to his family, before denouncing violence against anti-government groups and condemning those responsible. He called on police to look into all political-violence cases.

National Police chief Pol Gen Adul Saengsingkaew has assigned two senior investigators to handle the probe into Tuesday's violence, which also saw four protesters wounded by automatic gunfire. He said footage from seven expressway surveillance cameras was being compiled to obtain further details of the attack.

Chalerm Yoobamrung, who is head of the caretaker government's anti-protest operation, the Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order, said he believed such attacks against the anti-government movement would continue, because it had made a lot of enemies. He denied the government was behind violence against anti-government groups.

Asked to comment on the STR leadership's vow to take steps to pre-empt and to defend itself against further violence, Chalerm said police would arrest protesters found to be in possession of weapons. Police would also investigate statements made by red shirts on social media that appear to show foreknowledge of attacks before they occur, if complaints are lodged against them, the minister said.

I´m sure theis murder will be solved as swiftly as the many other murders and shootings against anti-government protestors in the last three months or so. That is to say, never as long as PTP stays in power.

Good riddance! I have no sympathy nor consolations for any terrorist (be it reds, PRDC, yellows, etc) who cause mobs that block traffic, seizing governement buildings , blocking roads etc.......these garbage are all termed as terrorists.......Enough is enough........the very first group who started mob rule in Thailand recently must be severely punished.

This used to be a great country with lots of potential until the mob rule was started by a group of garbage who themselves are corrupted. They are other ways to resolve issues like thru the poll not mobs.Show me one non-corrupted politican in Thailand first.

And I hate that the media is covering any stories on these mobs be it PRDC or the Reds....its only fueling more unrests.....just ignore these garbage and hopefully it would die down or at least the police and army should be united in putting a stop at it.

I am so worried now as I feel that a civil war is looming and its going to wipe out my investments in this country. enough is enough. Stop all terrorists.

I can see why you are worried. As I see it, as long as Thaksin is around, Thailand will be unstable. If he loses this round, he will stir up the Red Shirts and find every means possible to get back into power (and get home). He doesn't care about the consequences. It's all about what he wants. If his government survives, the protests will never stop, and the government will become more dictatorial and oppressive. If he gets home, then the chaos will be worse. If he has an "accident" when back, then the Red Shirts will turn Thailand upseide down.

I would suggest that you find a way to manage your investments, whatever they are, around the situation. We're in the Age of Thaksin's Chaos.

You're a nice person aren't you.

You have stated that you are celebrating because this guy was murdered by an act of terrorism, and in the very same sentence you purport to denounce terrorists from all sides.... You are one mixed up individual.

If there is a civil war breaks out, I sincerely hope you are among the first casualties.

There is no place in this world for hate filled and disgusting people like you.

I hope you go out at the hands of the same red shirt people you obviously support.

That would be great som nam na

What a horrible, hateful and selfish person you are. I hope all your investments do get wiped out.

Condolences to Khun Praphaphorn and family on their lose.

Charlem again showing his ignorance and lack of credibility and accountability - quote - "Police would also investigate statements made by red shirts on social media that appear to show foreknowledge of attacks before they occur, if complaints are lodged against them, the minister said". Why the hell does it need a complaint to be laid before this idiot and his stooges get off their pathetic asses and actually do what a competent police force should be doing regardless.

You would think that those posting on social media before the attacks happened would be investigated for conspiracy to commit murder at least.

Chalerm has no intentions of investigating anyone, and neither does his mate Tharit. Much too busy digging dirt on anti PTP protesters or dreaming up more trumped up charges. Those 5 star lunches must take up lot of time too. Chalerm would sooner just use this to make a threat that he expects more to come. No comment on what he plans to do about it. Then he denies the government are involved in any violence against people protesting vehemently against them!

Adul may be more honest, as he was in admitting the men in black with firearms on the Ministry of Labor roof were police officers after the drunkard had previously denied it. However, as with all violent attacks against anyone who is not a PTP supporter, no one will ever be caught, charged, convicted or sentenced.
