Pro, anti-PM camps take battle online

BANGKOK: -- With an unannounced truce in street confrontations, fans and foes of Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra have taken their battle to cyberspace.

The two camps have set up websites with similar names.

Just misspell one letter and fans or enemies of Thaksin may be bewildered by the heated contents of either http://www.taksinfanclub.com or http://www.thaksinfanclub.com.

Taksinfanclub.com may have gone beyond the legal limit by carrying statements with swear words attacking the law courts and yesterday the website was unavailable following contempt of court allegations.

Thaksinfanclub.com is filled with satire about the premier. One article comments on how Thaksin persuaded Chat Thai Party leader Banharn Silapa-archa, Democrat Party boss Abhisit Vejjajiva and Mahachon Party chief Sanan Kachornprasart to play golf.

Thaksin said he did not mind playing one against three. The first nine holes, Thaksin won straight with skilled hands and a few tricks, the correspondent said. The other three were getting upset and when Thaksin was about to complete the last nine holes, they abandoned the game, unable to cope with his dirty tricks.

Reading both websites seems sure to provoke strong emotions and demonstrate how Thais are divided over their leader.

2. On http://www.thaksinfanclub.com/ is a decreasing counter (currently at 2+ million) and ticking down once a second. What is it?

TRT to stop political dispute as to create harmony during the auspicious week

The Thai Rak Thai Party has asked for an end in the political disputes, as it would like to bring about harmony during the auspicious week to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of His Majesty the King’s Accession to the Throne. The Thai Rak Thai Party has urged all parties to find constructive solution to the ongoing political issues.

Executive member of the Thai Rak Thai Party Suranand Vejjajiva (สุรนันทน์ เวชชาชีวะ) referred to the order of the court for not allowing the opposition to reveal the information of the evidence in the court. He said everyone should respect the court’s decision. He personally believes that the judges have performed at their utmost.

He has urged all sides to be rational and work together so they can find proper solutions to the ongoing political problems. He also spoke about the website “Thaksin fan club” where the content in the website have referred to the resolution of the court, saying that his party is not involved in making the webpage. He added that the Ministry of Information Communication & Technology will check the website if there are complaints from the public.

Some clarity now as to which website is taking which side:

Pro-Thaksin website hits out at three courts

Thai Rak Thai (TRT) officials yesterday denied any connection with a controversial website – Taksinfanclub.com – that has used vulgar language in critical comments directed at the courts.

“Thai Rak Thai has nothing to do with that website. The party has all along accepted the decisions of the courts’ meetings. ...really??? since when?? :o And this incident is aimed at [discrediting] us,” TRT Deputy Spokesman Phimuk Simaroj said yesterday.

Phimuk said that he knew nothing about the Taksinfanclub.com website until he read about it in press reports.

The website’s contents seem intended to cause problems and create confusion, he added.

“The statements and remarks seem to harbour bad intentions against society, and possibly against TRT [as well]. It may dislike TRT, and so it used strong language that criticized and opposed the courts. It looks like it is aimed at causing more conflicts,” he said.

Taksinfanclub.com became a center of public attention when it was reported on Monday to be carrying strong statements that attacked the courts, including vulgar words critical of the courts’ suggestion that members of the Election Commission (EC) resign.

The website also threatened to use people power to oust the courts if they continue with deliberations that appear to threaten the EC.

However, the website was no longer accessible yesterday following indications of possible contempt charges against its operators.

Yesterday, ThaiDay could not reach Seht Harnrojjana, who is the registered owner of the website.

Meanwhile, political science expert and critic Prayad Hongtongkhum said that statements carried on Taksinfanclub.com were part of a political campaign aimed at destroying the courts’ credibility.

The three top courts have come under strong criticism from TRT supporters for discharging their duties energetically following His Majesty the King’s statements on April 25 urging the judiciary to help end the national political deadlock, he said.

“TRT supporters may now worry that this is the last stand for Thaksin’s party if the courts continue their actions, especially those that will affect the current election commissioners and the survival of TRT,” he said.

He added that the motive behind the website was obvious.

Prayad said that the courts have made great efforts to help the country’s political disputes move towards a peaceful conclusion, including giving the election commissioners the opportunity of voluntarily stepping down.

“Well, as we are still seeing, the election commissioners are clinging to their positions although the public no longer accepts them and their actions,” he said.

Another website, is "The Knight of the Third Wave" (<deleted>?? is that?? :D:D ) the official website for the "alledged Dr."

www.thaksin.net

with "Rethink Thailand" splashed about in its intro shockwave flash :o

and prominently displaying youthful, energetic photos taken 25 - 30 years ago :D

and includes gems like, "and Thailand has become a leader in economic, social and political development."

and highly suspect claims, "the Prime Minister has known the Former President for a very long time, since he had studied for a doctoral degree in Texas back in 1976." (in 1976, H.W. Bush was the Director of the CIA, residing in Washington DC and not likely to have encountered, at the time some insignificant Thai attending some hack school in another city 115 Km away from his H.W.'s other residence in Houston, let alone become friends with him). :D

the "Knight of Telecommunications" section regarding his business background unsurprisingly seems to overlook all the shady dealings he made to kickstart his career. :D

and highly suspect claims, "the Prime Minister has known the Former President for a very long time, since he had studied for a doctoral degree in Texas back in 1976." (in 1976, Bush was already working in the oil business and not likely to have encountered, at the time some insignificant Thai attending some hack school in another city 115 Km away, let alone become friends with him). :o

I don't recollect any source(s) to back this up, but from some reason I seem to recall that there is a grain of truth in this long-standing association. Maybe something to do with Bush Sr. being the CIA chief and all of the related spook stuff that was going on in Northern Thailand at that time?

One of the funnier things I have ever seen was back in late-2000 when Mr. Big was first running for office. There was some puff piece on television extolling his accomplishments and virtues. At one point they were spinning how Dr. Thaksin Shinawatra was the first Thai to launch a space satellite... cut to a shot of Doctor Mr. Big and a bunch of associates all wearing white lab coats with clipboards, sitting around in what looked like Mission Control in Houston. The implication was that Doctor Mr. Big was some sort of rocket scientist, taking telelemetry readings, calculating rocket trajectories, launch conditions and such. C'mon, the Doctor's advanced degrees are in Criminal Justice.
