BANGKOK, Apr 9 – A series of bombings in Thailand’s southern province of Yala was meant to shake the region’s economy and tourism, army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha said today.

In an interview before leaving for an inspection trip in Yala, he ruled out the possibility that the latest explosions which rocked Yala city were related to the assignment of a new 4th Army Region commander to the South.

In the mid-year army reshuffle, Lt-Gen Walit Rojanapakdi, commander of the 1st Army Corp, was appointed 4th Army Region commander, replacing Lt-Gen Sakol Chuentrakul.

He said the incident could be linked to the upcoming Songkran celebration and the 10th anniversary of Krue Se mosque incident, adding that Muslim militants’ objectives were to jeopardise the economy and tourism, and pressure Buddhist Thai people to move out of the area.

The attacked areas were dominated by the Thai Buddhist business community, he said.

Gen Prayuth said the militants have been trying to provoke the authorities to violently retaliate and they have readjusted their strategy by using small-sized bombs, aiming at burning targetted areas.

More closed-circuit cameras will be installed, he said and called on southern residents to fully cooperate with the authorities. (MCOT online news)

whats pathetic is the fact they know who these people are but do nothing, its impossible for dead people to kill others, all they need to do is start removing all these terrorists themselves and the others will think twice about what they are doing. When no action is being taken over what you do it only encourages more violent actions, when these terrorsits start being shot on site(as they are known the the thais) they will quickly remove themselves as they are all pathetic cowards that can only attack women and children, much like the reds......

The General is correct , he's timing is twenty years late , terrorists have been making their presence felt, not long after the first Indonesian Bali bombings , as they came over and taught them how to make crude rude but effective bombs , hence their signature is very similar to the Indonesians, up till that time , decapitating or the odd shooting was their means of making their presence felt, tourism has been a no go in this area for twenty odd years , what General Prayuth was on about is any body's guess. Mind you, the Malaysians knew that Indo Terrorists where in the South and never lifted one finger to help or tell Thailand. bah.gif

Or it could go the other way and you have mad Jihadis from around the world coming to defend their fellow 'Muslim' brothers.

"Army chief: Militants focus on rocking South’s economy, tourism"

What took you so long?

It's been only a few decades! But, who is paying attention?

To save and support Suthep's "protest" and his lemmings is more important than the unrest in the South. After all, we are talking about quasi-non-Thais down there.

NOTE FOR THE WITLESS: Comment in tongue in cheek to illustrate the morose nature of those traditionally in power who conveniently dismiss serious matters of national security because they are labor intensive and not in "your face" in what is the real Thailand to them: BANGKOK.

Change this title to "Militants focus on rocking Bangkok's economy, tourism" and it still applies. Of course the "militants" in Bangkok are the PDRC. If the Thailand Army is as concerned about the South, it should be as concerned about Bangkok and the rest of the Country's economy and tourism that is being held hostage to Suthep's efforts to over throw the government, theoretically of course. It's all interrelated.
