Are cameras cheaper in Germany or in Thailand?

I am going to buy a new camera in the near future, and I wonder if it's cheaper to do so in Germany (where I am currently) or when I am back in Thailand (next month). I will use the camera mainly in Thailand.

Thailand has lower VAT, but there might be other taxes and import tax.

(A camera range 10 to 20 kBaht, maybe Nikon P330 or 7100 or 7700 or Sony RX100 II.)

Have no clue what they cost in Germany. But Thailand is a controlled import country so only if you buy non supported items sold with shop guarantee are you likely to get much below normal list price. And many cameras sold here will have different model numbers than elsewhere so rather complex to compare sometimes. You might find this a good indication of what will likely be best price at any given time.

Perhaps best to decide which camera you want to buy, and then compare prices. Most of the large retailers in Thailand (Big Camera, World Camera AVCamera) post their prices, from which you can probably deduct 5-10% if you are prepared to pay cash. For example, both Big Camera and AVCamera have the Sony RX1002 at 22, 990 baht; how does that compare to German prices?

If you are not resident in Thailand, you can claim approx 7% tax back when you leave the country.

I suggest you think about where you spend more time

as warranty issues may affect your choice

Some manufacturers and or shops offer worldwide guarantees

others are limited the country of purchase

It could be very inconvenient to be in Germany and need help

when the service is in Thailand

Which is another reason to have some idea of what you are going to buy. As an example, Olympus offer a worldwide guarantee when you buy in Thailand; but I seem to recall that Canon is country specific.

In most places Canon is specific for the continent. If I buy the camera in Italy or France, I get warranty in Sweden or Germany also. But not in Thailand
