Pity the whole soi doesn't catch fire and all the appalling degenerate losers that frequent it to boot!

I almost share your sentiment, but it used to be quite pleasant, laid back, and unpretentious many years ago, compared to the loud, obnoxious scene it is today.

This one's right up there with, "Songkran's a nightmare. It used to be a respectful pouring of scented water over the hands" and that bullshit myth trotted out by the grumpy old men of TV was spectacularly debunked by one of the moderators the other day with a series of photographs dating back to the 1950s which depicted full-on water fights.

Soi Cowboy is a street full of bars that have near-naked young women dancing on elevated platforms and, given the profile of 80% of the men that visit these establishments, I doubt it was ever "pleasant or laid back".

You way you describe it, you make it sound like it was the bloody Rotary Club in Pall Mall.

Not the first and not the last fire in SC.

Imagine a fire in the Nana Plaza trap.

True, Nana would be a fire trap. But, I have always thought that Pat Pong would be a conflagration, should any building or vendor tent go up.

Is that bigoted spleen or jealousy?

To be fair, when I first started coming to Bangkok, I thought Nana Plaza was raunchier than Soi Cowboy

No doubt we tend to romanticise the past, but there was a time when you could wander through the soi without a continual feeling of being ripped off, and preserve an illusion that the 'hostesses' actually wanted to talk with you. Over time the money side of things has come more to the fore. When the 'man from Iran' snapped up around half of the bigger bars and upped prices dramatically, the old Cowboy all but disappeared. I visited for the first time this year recently, and had had enough after a couple of hours.

I would assume that the hostesses do still actually want to talk to customers. They just have different motivations for doing so.

I guess, over the years, the women have just become a lot more aware of the opportunities outside of the industry

Obviously, most of those opportunities won't pay as much as "hostessing" but they're are a lot more of them and the difference in remuneration is noticeably smaller than it was even 5 years ago.You can't blame them for barely being able to conceal their indifference to the typical punter.
