yes, drain open like "backwash" assuming you have a position "rinse" on your multi valve.

If this happens when you vacuum then your filter isn't functioning properly.

After backwash you need to rinse tthe pipes with the main drain open of course, as that is where the water goes.

the position "rinse" causes an additional cleansing of the filter (different from backwash), not the pipes.

This is useful to rinse the filter for a few seconds after the backwash process is complete. Often, during the backwash process, a small amount of dirt or debris will collect on the clean side of the filter. If the rinse setting is not used, then this debris will be sent back to the pool when the filter is put back into the filter position.

What Is the Rinse Cycle on a Swimming Pool Filter?
The swimming pool filter is turned to the rinse setting immediately after running the backwash cycle for 3 to 5 minutes. Typically, the rinse cycle is run for 30 seconds to one minute. In a sand filter, the rinse cycle allows water to flow back down through the sand to flush out any remaining dirt and debris from the filter and piping.

If this is a new pool or new pool equipment, dirty water returning to the pool can be due to a miss match of the pump and filter. Or the new filter media not having been sufficiently backwashed and rinsed.

If the pump is too powerful for the filter, it will pump dirt straight through the sand or Zelbrite and may even force some sand or Zelbrite through the laterals.

If the pump is too powerful, try adding more sand or Zelbrite.

All good filter multiport valves come with a clear view optic to watch when the water becomes clean when backwashing and rinsing before returning to the filtration position.
