Excise Department: World Cup to generate 1 billion baht of revenue

BANGKOK, 5 May 2014, (NNT) - The Excise Department has predicted that the upcoming World Cup, to be held during June 12th - July 13th, would boost public spending on alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages as well as cigarettes, enabling the department to collect at least an additional 1 billion baht in revenues.

According to Mr. Somchai Poonsawad, the Director General of the Department, the department will step up its inspection of pubs, bars, and several commercial public venues in order to prevent consumption of illegal booze and cigarettes. He pointed out previous statistics, which clearly showed that consumption of the goods surged during the World Cup season.

The aggressive measures are aimed at purging the market of excise laws violators and encouraging illegal alcoholic beverage and cigarette producers to enter the tax system. Mr. Somchai said the strict policies would also indirectly protect consumers from low quality alcoholic beverage and cigarettes, which post more dangerous side effects on consumers than the genuine ones.

The Director General also urged residents to report any illegal production or trading of goods subjected to excise taxes to the department’s 1713 hotline around the clock.

Congratulations are in order to Somchai Wongsawat and his voluptuous wife Yaowapa. They are, after all, in complete control of the Excise department. Let's hope they invest this windfall wisely for their families future prosperity.

Not more bloody Shins.

And increased alcohol and tobacco sales is just what the doctor ordered.

Two good questions. I'm sure the Thai education system teaches world geography and multiple time zones "when attending college."

95% of them couldn't point to Brazil on a map of the world. I asked a student just last semester to point to Thailand on a map and he poked at India.

And the poor souls that do go there and return are usually arrested for trafficking at the airport on arrival.

So the final on Election day and the rest of the matches after closing time of the bars and restaurants.

Don't think it will give a boost to cigarettes and acohol sales at all.

That's why they increased the price of the cigarettes already........next move soon, to increase the price of alcoholic drinks.

Anything to get more money........

They already raised the tax on alcoholic beverages in 2013!

I showed one student a map, and he said "Chicken Chow Mein, please."

I think on same day is election in advance day. So no alcohol selling.

Good timing...

Ha ha, good one. Let's see if they will bend the rules (officially) this time so as not to lose the revenue.

Tobacco and alcohol products seem to be easy revenue targets of inefficient, bloated and corrupt governments world wide. Edited by Benmart

It is a Somchai Poonsawad, not Wongsawat.
