Students Take Advantage Of Science

I don't know whether to consider this good news or bad:

NEW YORK - Students are using a new ring tone to receive messages in class -- and many teachers can't even hear the ring.

Some students are downloading a ring tone off the Internet that is too high-pitched to be heard by most adults. With it, high schoolers can receive text message alerts on their cell phones without the teacher knowing.

As people age, many develop what's known as aging ear -- a loss of the ability to hear higher-frequency sounds.

On one hand, this prevents phones from disturbing the teachers themselves during class- on the other hand, though, the bulk of the students will still hear the tone and potentially be distracted. And in principle, students shouldn't be paying attention in class to their phones.

I suppose ultimately the technology war over phones in schools will result in area-wide signal jammers, at which point things will probably get taken to court...

Or they can always put it in vibrator mode. I have my own classroom policy about prohibiting them on using their mobile phones during class hours. I joked about the idea of selling them for 10 Baht if caught, they all laughed about it. But still the rule was still inforced, and they all know they can't use their phones during the class. And if I hear a ringing sound, I stop in the middle of the lecture and try to find whose phone was ringing, that usually scare the students. :o
