I wonder if the guy..or gal...that stamped 1881 on it, most likley by hand....ever thought there would be a bunch of people wondering what this gadget is, viewed on a flat thingy via airwaves and stuff.

In the meantime, whilst we are awaiting a clue can I offer a simple one to guess.

Both components are used together.

I actually used to use this back in the early 80s

One I know, part of a surveyors kit, the image on the right are chaining arrows.

(don't know the name of the thing on the left)

Assuming that Thaddeus is correct, and no reason to assume otherwise, if you know it, you know it.

Then the left hand pic must be the actual chain, one of the handles has 100F on it (100Feet?)

edit to add .. I don't know why but the 'chaining arrow' pic instantly brought to mind a Black Adder episode where the Bishop of Bath and Wells was threatening to ram a red hot poker up Black Adders bottom.

A thingy for adjusting tappets. But gimme a ring spanner, a screwdriver, and my trusty old feeler gauges any old day. Much more fun! thumbsup.gif

Yep, designed to do away with feeler gauges and do the job in a couple of minutes. Great tool in a garage many moons ago to save time.

Thaddeus and ThaidDown

Yes both correct.I remember surveying around the roads and fields of Leicester,uk,

The chain was subsequently 25m and at each length the arrow would be rammed in the ground.

A site was surveyed with offsets, so a few chains and nothing else.

Now they use EDM and lasers

I said it was easy!

It's an old school video game controller. I think the top knob was also a joystick from memory.

Well ... the first thing I thought of was ... 'OUCH' ... w00t.gif

But a first-up guess is that it could be an early 'screw top opener', but what the smaller ring does ... ???
