Chiang Rai Earthquake continues to generate aftershocks

CHIANG RAI, 22 May 2014 (NNT) - Chiang Rai provincial authorities are quickly providing assistance to locals who have been affected by the earthquake that struck on May 5th.

Homes in areas around the quake’s epicenter have been utterly destroyed, causing distressed locals to live in fear and preventing them from returning to their homes.

Even though the quake erupted two weeks ago, there is no sign that aftershocks would end anytime soon. The latest one was a 4.1 magnitude tremor that struck on May 21st.

The quake has also pushed sediments and sand buried underground to emerge and fill up water wells, causing these water sources to become contaminated. For this reason, the locals are faced with an inadequate supply of drinking water.

Provincial Governor Pongsak Wangsamer has also ordered related authorities to provide financial assistance to about 4,700 households in Phan district during May 22nd to 25th.

Each household is entitled to approximately 33,000 baht worth of compensation. Assistance to other districts will follow suit once official surveys of their damage are completed.

Since when has any ground water source been pure enough for consumption anywhere in Thailand?? Remember when in Thailand" Don't drink the water "

Unbelievable!! Thailand has just learnt that tremors at 4.0 happen everyday, in many places around the world. <deleted> is this reporting?

"Each household is entitled to approximately 33,000 baht worth of compensation." cheesy.gifclap2.gif

Good on you Governor, as each household receives maybe 5,000 baht, and you and your <deleted> pocket the rest. I'd sure like to know where the figure of 33k came from. Ohh! It's a magic trick. Got it. ;)

I will be up there tomorrow , the earth hasn't moved for me in decades, so any after shocks will certainly be nature and not man made.biggrin.png

Not totally correct, in some areas (okay, a lot of areas) water is contaminated with arsenic from fertilizers etc but in Chiang Rai and a lot of the mountainous areas the water is perfectly drinkable from the ground. Maybe it's the mountain water? I understand that well water is usually better than the tap water. I survived it anyway!

Lets hope thats the last, As people are really suffering and 33k really wont help them rebuild their lives.
