The challenge is that Khao San is a relic much like patpong. They were great but backpackers have dwindled and what they have to offer is stale. Who wants to go to a bar and see girls shift from 1 foot to the other. Khao San is not as cheap as it was. The only reason nana flourishes is the bars in the plaza have the right idea for entertaining and there are lots of short time hotels around.
