NCPO to be asked to slash household LPG price

BANGKOK: -- The so-called Thai Energy Reform Group will propose the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) to slash the price of liquefied petroleum gas or LPG for household from 22.63 baht/kilogramme to 21.38 baht/kilogramme as charged on LPG for transport.

A leading member of the group and a strong advocate for energy reform, Ms Rosana Tositrakul said today (Wednesday) that the proposed cutback of the price of household LPG to be on par with the price of LPG for transport was meant to prevent the LPG for transport to be used for household and also to prevent the smuggling of LPG to neighbouring countries.

Ms Rosana said the group would also ask the NCPO to scrap a resolution of former prime minister Somchai Wongsawat’s cabinet to set aside a substantial portion of LPG for petro chemical industry as first priority. She suggested that the first priority should be given to household consumption at a fair price which does not necessarily be the world’s market price.

In addition, the group will propose the replacement of the price structure of finished petroleum products which is based on the prices in Singapore. Various imaginable costs such as premium, transport, insurance and loss during transport from Singapore to Thailand must be scrapped because there are no such costs in reality because the oil products are refined in Thailand, said Ms Rosana.

“We do not demand cheap oil, but we demand fair prices to all parties concerned,” said Ms Rosana, adding that petro chemical industry should use LPG for industrial use which is charged differently from LPG for household use.
