Prisons chief wants regular searches
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- In response to the junta policy against illegal drugs, Corrections Department chief Suchat Wong-anantachai urged prisons to conduct regular "clean-ups" - search all inmates' cells - and to report by June 16 about the probe into prison guards suspected to be involved in trafficking drugs.

The department also wants all prison chiefs to keep it posted about anti-drug measures they implement.

Suchat said he had assigned his deputy Kobkiat Kasiwiwat to review inmates of concern and analyse details from each prison on who had dealt in drugs from behind bars and should be sent to Khao Bin Prison in Ratchaburi, the country's "super-max" facility.

Deputy chief of the Office of Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) Prayong Preeyajit had instructed officials to probe and pinpoint grounds within 30 days for legal action against officials who take bribes over drug cases. The PACC has reviewed 27 cases and launched five indictments.

Probation Department chief Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol said a faster procedure for forced drug rehabilitation was in place and only 10 per cent of those underwent this returned to using drugs.

The junta seems to really mean business. Kudos to them for cracking down on corrupt officials in all spheres!

Surly if people were doing their jobs, this would have been taken

care of,so its going to take a new broom to get them to do their

jobs, prisoners will not be happy, can expect some backlash from

them, but its good that people are now been made to do their jobs.

Corrections Department chief Suchat Wong-anantachai urged prisons to conduct regular . . . . ? ? ? ? ? ?

He is "URGING" ? ? ?

If he's in charge of the prisons in Thailand, surely he should not be "urging", but "ORDERING", or am I overlooking something ?

Well, the prison wardens would first have to clear the searches with the prisoners union. You know Thailand, everyone tries to avoid upsetting anyone else.

Yes you're got to remember you're in Thailand!

Suchat Wong-anantachai should vow to order them to conduct regular searches.......not just urge them....

Pathetic at best. Such activities that are being "URGED" should have been SOP since day one. Just more useless rhetoric from a group that talk a far better game than they play.

Suchat Wong-anantachai should vow to order them to conduct regular searches.......not just urge them....

But that means the "responsibility" would fall on him if the searches causes problems/media uproar...definitely don't want that. Better just to "urge" because that way if something goes wrong it's much easier to saddle the prison warden with the responsibility and blame.

"Urged" or "Ordered" what is certain the Correction Chief would nether have uttered those words as what ever he said would have been in Thai.

Maybe certain English Language media sources should find something better than "Google Translate" for their translations. coffee1.gif

Google Translate does not handle Thai very well at all.

lets do a press release first, you know, just so everyone has time to get rid of everything before we start the searches 5555
