fasteddie
Go to tescos, buy a dell and take it with you, cheaper than Thailand by far with a worldwide guarantee.
DogNo1
If it were me, I'd go for the Ultranote IPS 740. It appears to be ready off-the-shelf. I'd just pop in in my bag and bring it with me. Still, for 40760 baht you could get a very nice machine at Phantip with similar specs. Shopping for it might be fun too. Your choice really. Saradoc1972
I put the same question regarding bringing my used Desktop PC (or rather parts of it minus the case and PSU) over from Germany through ThaiVisa's "Ask the Lawyer" not too long ago and got the answer, I should leave it in one piece and I would not have to pay import duties and taxes, but I'd have to declare it. taotoo
Don't ship nothing. Bring your old piece of s*hit that is dieing...when you arrive, then do some window shopping various IT outlets, malls until you get one with specs you like. OS, legitimate, legal or not? Seriously? $400 for legal, genuine and allows 3-4 instances of reinstallation verses less than $10 or FREE for an OS by other means. ANY program I need I can download for FREE by using torrents. And you get that warm fuzzy feeling of not knowing whether malware is built-in to your hacked windows or not, nor whether microsoft will be disabling your installation 5 minutes from now.
Digitalbanana
There is no duty on computer products http://www.dutycalculator.com/hs-lookup/174883/hs-tariff-code-for-computers/ Why is that? I paid it on mine. But I had other things in the parcel too. Perhaps you answered your own question?

SS1
Thanks for all the replies. I'm not really looking into buying a branded laptop, since it seems I can get a higher spec laptop cheaper from a company that assembles it for you instead of buying a branded one. I was originally looking at laptops from PC specialist, such as this one with sligtly improve specs https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/vortexIV-17/ . For instance, the one from pc specialist with similar / slightly higher specs would cost £1100 while an equivalent from DELL would cost £1300. In case of buying a branded laptop it would be easier of course to simply get it from Thailand. In case of shipping it, it would first arrive at my parents' address and they would set it up and make it "used" before repackaging it and sending it just like a personal belonging I forgot to bring with me. Post proposing illegal activity removed. Curious to hear what was actually suggested!
Digitalbanana
It doesn't matter of its "used" or shipped in brand spanking new.
sirchai
Legit Window 8.1 will add 3000 baht to your cost. I've found Dell to have excellent support and they don't seem to care where you bought it. + 1 can only reckon DELL's service.

Then pay, pay, pay... I don't mind a set-back every so often when I conpare to what I can.have saved. As far as malware concerns/threats, you can never be sure about anything these days, however I have a little clue as to what I'm doing although torrents or anything for that matter that require intellect or good judgment probably shouldn't be attempted by the general user/public
