I need a time server

For my router I need to add a valid time server IP address.

I have been searching the web and the NIST and NTP webpages, but however those servers are public as I understand, it looks like they have a secret.

They show lines like

server 0.asia.pool.ntp.org

But I need to enter an IP address in digits, and I'm unable to find one. Anyone can help me out.

What about issuing a tracert command under a CMD window ?

C:\>tracert 0.asia.pool.ntp.org

Tracing route to 0.asia.pool.ntp.org [27.114.150.10]

Thanks for that, never heard about a tracert biggrin.png

Good there are still credible members on this forum.

My guess is that the only problem with that input (number instead of name) is that it will not use the pool of Time Servers but only the one, so if that Time Server fails you don't have a backup

Indeed that is, and that is the reason why I needed a new IP address, but my router doesn't accept the name.

Anything I can change about ?

The IP address you provided works fine.

Could just use ping 0.asia.pool.ntp.org which for me shows as 194.27.44.55

List at pool.ntp.org

I just downloaded the manual and it says you can use IP or host name.

Enter the IP address or host name of the time

Address (2): server here.

This I get when I add the hostname 0.asia.pool.ntp.org, I have the latest frimware

It may not like the 5 dotted notation as the manual does say you can use either. Try the Thailand pool which is 4 groups - th.pool.ntp.org or if still doesn't work, the NECTEC IP I showed above.

Nope. Same result

This is maybe a wild goose chase, but what if you set your Windows PC to sync with the time server Pool and input the ip address of your PC in the router ??

So the PC Syncs with the Timeserver Pool and your router will sync it's time with your PC ?

Will that work ??

Edit: // Added Ps:

Found this

We do not guarantee and we do not support the accuracy of the W32Time service between nodes on a network. The W32Time service is not a full-featured NTP solution that meets time-sensitive application needs. The W32Time service is primarily designed to do the following:

  • Make the Kerberos version 5 authentication protocol work.
  • Provide loose sync time for client computers.

Good suggestion, but doesn't seem to work

Heads up...

at http://www.pool.ntp.org/zone/asia

it clearly states

"To use this pool zone, add the following to your ntp.conf file: "
server 0.asia.pool.ntp.org
server 1.asia.pool.ntp.org
server 2.asia.pool.ntp.org
server 3.asia.pool.ntp.org

No, 5 dotted notation will not work "on the router".

Yes the IP changes continually (as stated, it is a pool).

Here is my info, ip's are functional ...

w32tm_Thailand 2010-06-28

Best effort, 5 NTP Thailand Servers

1 NECTEC ntp: clock.nectec.or.th , 203.185.67.115 , 21ms ping
2 Kaesart ntp: ntp.ku.ac.th , 158.108.212.149 , 21ms ping
3 Pool Server: th.pool.ntp.org , 203.158.118.7 , 22ms~25ms ping
4 TRUE ntp: 7507-cp2.asianet.co.th , 203.144.254.1 , 19ms~20ms ping
5 NIMT ntp1: time1.nimt.or.th , 203.185.69.60 , 24ms~26ms ping

This is my NTP server List Order for w32tm in the registry...
203.185.67.115 158.108.212.149 203.158.118.7 203.144.254.1
I set 4 different ntp servers
I tested all the above, all within 0.0005 seconds of each other

I also have these setup in my ADSL router (TP-link)

Some other testing ...
TRUE NTP: 7507-cp2.asianet.co.th 203.144.254.1 19ms~20ms delay
National Institute of Metrology (THAILAND) NIMT
time1.nimt.or.th 203.185.69.60 24ms~26ms ping
time2.nimt.or.th 203.185.69.59 25ms~26ms ping
time3.nimt.or.th 203.185.69.56 24ms~26ms ping
203.185.69.60 203.185.69.59 203.185.69.56

Pool Servers:
The pool server has several types divided by continent divided by country.
But we recommend using the Worldwide at pool.ntp.org.
Pool Server: Thailand , th.pool.ntp.org , 158.108.212.149 , 20ms~22ms ping
Pool Server: Singapore , sg.pool.ntp.org , 116.0.71.34 , 51ms~53ms dping
Pool Server: Asia , asia.pool.ntp.org , 116.193.83.174 , 134ms~135ms ping

However, per the OP, the issue is the router will not accept the input.

Odd that router only accepts one NTP address.

Concerning the accuracy of the W32Time service,

I have noted that it is accurate to <5 sec. on a wired LAN.

Cheers - howto

Guys, the point of a pool is to provide multiple servers. The method of "pooling" or properly "load balancing" is to redirect the request to multiple servers. They are using DNS cnames to get to different servers in most likely a round robin fashion.

Use the pool ip and do not worry about which server responds. If one server goes down, a different server will respond, but the router won't care.

And how do you know the pool IP, because every time you do a tracert it will show another IP address, which is part of the pool .

What's wrong with using nslookup. That is the proper command to resolve names:

C:\Users\A>nslookup 0.asia.pool.ntp.org
Server: ns1.........
Address: 10.2.16.10

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: 0.asia.pool.ntp.org
Addresses: 157.7.154.23
78.100.70.146
89.218.2.66
106.187.99.6

Nslookup will show you all addresses configured for the hostname. If you use ping or traceroute they will use different options of the name resolver and use only one ip of the pool in round robin fashion.
