I mapped Pattaya's bars soi by soi. Tell me what I got wrong

Long-time former resident, offshore industry by trade. I got tired of Google showing me the same twenty tourist places while the 'interesting' soi bars that catch our interest, and we actually drink in don't readily exist online, so I built my own map.

It covers any city in Thailand live: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Songkhla, anywhere. But I've spent the most months on Pattaya specifically. The beach side, LK Metro, Soi Buakhao, and a lot of the darkside strips east of Sukhumvit that have zero web presence, like Soi Khao Noi, Khao Talo and Nernplubwan, and of course around Ma Prachan Lake.

It's free, no signup, works in any phone browser: sipnsavor.app and just search Pattaya.

Two honest requests. If a bar is closed, renamed or sitting in the wrong spot, tell me here and I'll fix it the same day (if I don't get swamped). There's also a report button on every place. And if your local doesn't show at all, name it. The map is only as good as the people correcting it, which is why I'm posting here and not somewhere polite.image.png

I've also created an app for young Thai ladies to meet up with gentlemen of a mature age in Pattaya. I've called it Carbon Dating.

In Pattaya you're never further than 6 metres from a bar, a hotel, a short-time room, a massage shop, a barber, a restaurant, a coffee shop, a taxi stand...or a rat. 7/11's are even closer than that

This is a web app and released on apple store now, google play store on Aug 3, but the web address sipnsavor.app is the most up-to-date and complete. This is not a commercial site, info to those interested in travel to Thailand and looking for where to eat, drink and stay.

Can you tell me which one serves a draft pint of Leo?

Never available anywhere I know for some reason!

Ran the search, to my surprise, it came back with 4,999... must have been an error!

I'm only interested in a bar not in a tourist trap that has one of these signs outside...

Search results: 0 found 😄

Guess everyone needs a hobby, though not sure how that differs or is better than Gmaps.

Calm down GG ...

I am capturing all that could be of interest to the tourist or the resident. Whether temporary or long-term. For anyone that does not find it of any use, there could be another that finds some use for it. Perhaps help search for a hotel near where they find a pint or 2 planning ahead. Thanks for the note in any case!

A lot of the names of the bars on these maps will change in 6 month's time. 😂

This is a live search, should catch when they do for the way it searches.

Will it be able to keep up with the pace of change here? 😂

Let's see it try. If a business is registered, it searches there first.

Be careful on the dark side streets if you are blind. Even well-sighted people are at risk when it gets busy over there with the narrow streets and dodgy walkways. That 6m rule not so applicable East side, but have fun where you are!

There's also a report button on every place.

I clicked to report a wrongly named bar but it's logged it as a closed down report. Also clicked on where to stay near here and the closest place suggested was 10 minutes walk away when there's a hotel almost across the road.

Both fixed, and thank you, this is exactly the field testing needed. The report button now has two doors, one for closed and one for wrong name, and the wrong name one asks what the place should be called and sends it straight to me. And you were right about the hotel across the road. The app was asking Google, which ranks by fame, so the little places upstairs never made the list. It now also reads the local OpenStreetMap lodging layer, and in my own test it found a guesthouse 34 metres from the bar door. Refresh and try the same spot again, and if that hotel across the road still is not there, name it and I will seat it by hand.

@jmccarty Great stuff, much appreciated.

What you got wrong, was purely to come up with such an idea.

It was there last night, and actually there twice with slightly different names. It may well have been there first time and I didn't scroll down far enough, as even though it says they're being ordered by distance this doesn't appear to be the case.

However, this morning it's gone again as the list seems restricted in length so it may have fallen off the bottom.

In general, there's so much wrong on Google and OpenStreetMap you'd be pi55ing into the wind trying to fix it. The site looks it's used too much AI to write it as the layout and colouring are unfriendly, and if a user can't rely on it to be right they'll soon lose faith.

I know fixing it is what you're trying to do with the likes of this thread so good luck, but I think you'll need it.

Thanks for the feedback. Pattaya is a challenge compared to few other places. What you saw last night was multiple updates weeding out duplicate names and errors as much as possible.

Also applying some cartography rules to try and improve legibility at different zooms. That's an even bigger challenge, and expect Pattaya and parts of Bangkok will never be 100% accurate. Can see multiple businesses registered at same address, even more conflicting info on a map with objective to show what an area has to offer.

Thanks again. The map btw is not made by AI, its open sourced, and I will probably update it to a paid map on the weekend. I have been avoiding increasing cost as much as I can for now. I am testing on various devices from 7 inch Flip 7, to 48 inch monitor and many in-between. On small mobile phones, it's not great and will inevitably rework the screen completely for the Android and iOs app versus the website, which you are using now. There will be trade-offs of course.

Cheers!

One more note, did you toggle the screen on the bottom left corner? Can go from dark, to inverted, to natural.

@Gottfrid Why? Seems useful to me.

@jmccarty good effort - I'm going to try it on my Thai phone 👍

Awesome! I see an app that points out where you can drink beer and eat in Pattaya! Really? Take 5 steps right and there´s your beer bar, walk another 10 to the left and there´s your restaurant. God forbid, that they sell both food and drinks in the same place. 😂

You and i both know that - newbies may not. In fact there may be places in Pattaya where your comments don't apply.

I think you're just looking to find fault with something that might be useful to some people.

I shall try it then form an opinion - nobody knows it all - even we "old hands."

Every day's a school day 😉

Gottfrid - I get your point. I am testing it in a very high-density bar and restaurant zone to apply what I can learn about this globally. If it can work in Pattaya, there are few more challenging locations. Thanks for your input in any case. I don't expect everyone will have any interest in this like anything that comes along.

Please consider adjusting the street names. If the Thai names were followed, or preceded or replaced, by the common English name equivalent, this would be an immense improvement. Thanks.
