webfact Posted July 2, 2014 Share Posted July 2, 2014 Burirum residents oppose oil explorationBURIRUM, 2 July 2014, (NNT) - Burirum locals have expressed their opposition to the oil exploration and excavation in their province, fearing the move would negatively affect the area’s environment and agricultural sector.More than 100 representatives from Burirum’s villages of Baannongkheelhek, Baannonkwa, Baannongthad, Baannongphaidong, Sub-districts of Huaphai, Toomyai, and Districts of Candong, and Kumuang gathered at Baanpakhamdong village hall to express their opposition to the oil exploration of Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum Group Company Limited.The protesters handed out leaflets with information on the impact of the drilling on the area's natural resources, environment, residents' livelihood, health and farmland.Locals have urged related officials to postpone the oil drilling until a thorough environmental impact study has been completed.Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum, however, has already proceeded with the exploration. -- NNT 2014-07-02 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Ummmmm......potential for environmental destruction and break up of already stretched social cohesion? Also, fear of communities/households not seeing more than a fraction of the profits generated, if any at all? Shouldn't think it would play out too well with certain bird populations either, should large scale drilling commence. Apropos this news, I heard from a friend in Kalasin that there were oil companies planning on fracking, which would play out even worse for Isaan environment if permitted, especially water resources. US and Australia are already paying a high cost for their willingness to allow fracking to proceed without adequate environmental controls (with exception of more cautious approach taken by New York State). From California to Pennsylvania, large parts of the US are now well and truly fracked for generations to come, with seriously polluted land and water sources. Kids will grow up wondering how stupid their parents / grandparent generations could have been. But then we live in an Idiocracy, so hardly surprising....... The legislation states 'Minerals belong to the state. No one can explore for minerals or undertake mining unless a prospecting license or mining lease is first obtained.'.
