BANGKOK, July 7 -- More than 4,000 suspects allegedly involved in betting on the 2014 World Cup being held in Brazil have been apprehended, and some 300-plus bookmakers have been nabbed so far, according to deputy national police chief Pol Gen Ake Angsananond.

Speaking on Sunday, Gen Aek said some 1,200 websites which allowed betting for football have been shut down by police, while the authorities are preparing to close more than 300 others.

Senior police officers responsible for suppressing gambling on the World Cup which closes its curtains on July 13 met Sunday to follow up progress they made on suppressing illegal betting.

Gen Aek said police would blacklist those arrested bookmakers while they would closely watch the betters after the World Cup tournament ends, hoping that they would stop their gambling behavior in future.

On entertainment venues which telecast the World Cup matches live, especially those at tourist destinations, he said police would try to talk to the owners that betting is illegal before making any arrest in order “not to ruin tourism climate.” (MCOT online news)

4,000 World Cup gamblers arrested by Thai Police

BANGKOK, 7 July 2014 (NNT) - The Football Gambling Prevention & Suppression Center operating under the Royal Thai Police revealed that more than 4,000 people who were involved in gambling activities during the FIFA World Cup 2014 have been arrested. Out of that number, 300 were bookmakers.

Police General Ake Angsananont, a Deputy National Police chief, revealed that the bookmakers have been blacklisted in a bid to monitor their behavior and prevent repeated offenses. Punters would be placed on the police watch-list as well.

Around 1,200 football gambling websites that have engaged its clients to predict the results of the World Cup matches have been shutdown. Police are set to close off at least 200 to 300 more websites to prevent the spread of football gambling activities.

Regarding entertainment venues at night that are opened for its patrons to view the soccer matches, Gen. Ake said that police would take strict action against the venues that operate beyond its closing hours.

This and other "unpopular" laws that are being enforced, for example closing of bars at 2am. While it might seen trivial it shows a need to look into and perhaps change laws that have had a blind eye turnd on them with a kick back paid to the authority. Is is afterall a way to remove some corruption

just tried willhill.co.uk ... their page still displays

considering this is one of the top ranked gambling web sites, would say they are not doing a very good job at trying to stop gambling
