June 30, 200620 yr From July 1 the Chaweng Beach road will be one-way going south, according to a (Thai only) sign outside Coco-Blues. For the past few days, police were also handing out leaflets (only in Thai) to shop owners along the beach road explaining the system with a map attached. This has been talked about for 5 years. Now 1 day to 'prepare'!?!? Can't wait to see what the taxi's do, plus the time-share lads who cruise the street continuously. The lake road, which must be used to go north, will end up a drag strip for the taxi's to get back to the beach road for fares! Plus zero signs in English so tourists wont have a clue. Watch out for the police. May be an excuse for them to also collect more fines (ala helmet law).
July 1, 200620 yr Been through Chaweng to check it out and if it starting today then no-one is giving a rats ar** about it,traffic flowing in both directions as before. Not a policeman in sight to enforce it at either end so I'd guess the 1st july start date is erronous... This could be a blessing in disguise as the second sign with the map and directions of the new route near the turning for Laem Din has been placed on the wrong side of the road (i.e. you cant see it when you're travelling north) so how in god's name is anybody gonna know they've got to turn left??? Oh I forgot, TIT.... P.S. Chaweng really smelt of sh** as I rode through today,mmm.. I'm sure the holiday makers are going to be desperate to re-book for next year....
July 1, 200620 yr They just blocked it off about 20 mins ago. I wonder how much it will screw up traffic
July 3, 200620 yr it's horrible...the street behind the main-street at the boxing stadium totally collapsed already in the afternoon. the traffic on the main street is more relaxed, but for the taxi-drivers it's a nightmare and all shop- and restaurant-owner are complaining about the parking prohibition on the left side on the sidewalk.
July 3, 200620 yr How long will it stay this way? At least I can zip down chaweng without the sitting behind taxis going 5 km honking at every farang in sight.
July 9, 200619 yr it's horrible...the street behind the main-street at the boxing stadium totally collapsed already in the afternoon. the traffic on the main street is more relaxed, but for the taxi-drivers it's a nightmare and all shop- and restaurant-owner are complaining about the parking prohibition on the left side on the sidewalk. The one way traffic system is working so well that next week the locals are going to be asked to try it as well!!!!!!!
