Desperately seeking School and ED Visa advice without the F.U.D.

Featured Replies

Enjoying the beauty of Thailand has been a dream of mine for so long, and I'm finally in a position where I can realize it. These forums though have cast so much doubt on my plans.

I'm really hoping someone out there can distill what I'm reading right now and provide much needed help.

I live in the United States, and want to live in Bangkok for 6 months. Ideally, I'd leave for BKK two months from now.

I'm investigating language schools, such as AAA Thai and Language Express. I was a linguistics major at one time and really wish to study a South East Asian language.

Is there any certainty someone might give about the best process to go about this, so that I don't find myself having invested so much only to be turned away in 60 days?

Thank you very much in advance.

I think best is 2x tourist visa. With extensions it will give you 6 months in Thailand (w one visa run). If you should decide to study a language school, can convert to non-imm visa.

Don't worry, traveling on USA passport no problems. It's third worlders who need to be concerned.

I suggest you get a single entry tourist visa to start your trip.

The after arriving visit a few schools and decide which school is best for you. Then enroll and go out for a single entry ED visa.

For your planned stay you could also get a 2 entry tourist visa that would give almost 6 months of stay. You can go to school with this visa there is no requirement to have a ED visa. The ED visa is just a way to get a visa that gives a permit to stay that can be extended if planning on staying long term..

My story I started checking out schools from my home country that offered Thai language courses. Then I started Skypeing with one. The girl was always helpful. I had many questions over a period of a month or so. They offered 6 month and one year "Ed Visas".

I finally made a bank transfer to them, about $400.00 and they sent me all the documents to take to The Thai Consulate.

The schooling period asked The Consulate for a 6 month visa, the course was 100 hours, 2.5 months. 3 hours 3 days a week. The consulate knew my plans to retire here so they offered me a one year visa for a slightly higher price than the 6 month visa. So I took it, went to school, never missed a day and went out in the streets and spoke it in the afternoons.

That was 5 years ago. I speak Thai and Isaan/Lao now.

So find a school you are comfortable with, talk to them on the phone or internet, transfer the funds and relax.

You will get your visa in your present country and not have to do much here in Thailand.
