Good morning.

My question...

I am married to a Thai national for past 8 years. We want to operate a business in Thailand. I am on a retirement visa here.

I do not intend to work in the business, but will use my money to purchase it.

Can that money be in a joint account, for the purpose of my retirement visa renewal?

Thanks

it appears from the info provided you are on an 'extension of stay', not a 'visa', and the 400k required for an 'extension of stay' needs to be in an account of the applicant solely. so no the monies cannot be in a joint account.

just to clarify, for an 'extension of stay' whether based on marriage or retirement both requires the monies in an account in the applicants name solely.

If you use your "retirement money", the 800,000 Baht, to purchase stock, for capital expenditure, to pay rent, cover embezzlement expenses, etc. for your wife's business, then the money will not be in the bank account in its entirety over the 800,000 Baht stipulated amount for the complete 3 months prior to renewal. In such a case, your renewal would be refused.

If you are here on a retirement extension, the financial requirement is 800k and it must be in an account in a Thai bank in your name only, it cannot be in a joint account.

Just to clarify... I have been living and working in Thailand for the past 9 years, 8 of which I am married to a thai national.

The money required for "Extension of Stay", retirement, will not be used for the business. It will be in a seperate account. I wanted that account to be joint, but it looks like that is not possible.... correct?

Thanks for the replies.....

an alternative you may wish to consider is to obtain a 'non-o visa' based on marriage at savanaket laos for which no financials are currently required to be provided at all.

such a visa is good for almost 15 months but you would need to do border hops every 90 days though.

It cannot be a joint account. But for retirement some offices will let you do it if you have 1.6 million baht in the account.
