French and German leaders mark WW1 anniversary

PARIS: -- The French and German presidents have commemorated the 100th anniversary of Germany's declaration of war on France on 3 August 1914.

Francois Hollande and his German counterpart, Joachim Gauck, made a joint tribute in Alsace to soldiers killed during World War One.

They were to lay the first stone for a memorial at Vieil Armand cemetery.

On Monday, events will be held in Belgium to mark the UK's declaration of war on Germany.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron will take part in that ceremony in recognition of the day that the UK went to war.

and for what ? some guy got whacked and that was enough to start a war ?

Your outstanding knowledge and depth of understanding of the complex political intrigues, national rivalries, complex treaties and developments that led to WW1 following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife is self evident in your erudite and succinct comment.

Complex world rivalries around trade & territories (colonialism), empires in decline (Austro Hungarian), France smarting from 1870 and allied with Russia who liked its role as protector of the Slavs, Germany believing it was the best militarily and Britain worried about a naval challenge from Germany.  Mix it all up and we got a conflict.

This is the best paragraph summation I've read about the causes of WWI.

Take a bow Cats, you've hit the nail on its head.

I doubt their is a single person alive of European, North American, New Zealand, Australia or White South African decent who did not have many of their family line perish in the terrible war.

And it is only fitting on this day and the days to come that mark the centenary of this terrible slaughter of human life that we remember them, whichever side they fought, and we should not forget the civilians and non combatants who perished too...

Britain and France should not have entered WW1 because matters were created by a 18 years old fellow from Bosnia named Gavrilo Princip he killed the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary in Sarajevo with a pistol, as a result Austria indented to act militarily with Bosnia.

Bosnia was not able to defend itself against Austria, therefore they asked Russia to help them Russia agreed to do it, Austria was not able to deal militarily against Russia, as a result they asked Germany to help them, Germany agreed to do it

But at this stage Germany did not want taking part in this war and they asked Russia several times to stop getting involved in it unfortunately Russia did not agree.

In 1878 the entire German states united into a total new forceful Germany, France who had been the European power for a very long time were not happy about that and they got into war with Germany 1880/81 and for the first time lost it against a powerful Germany.

At the same time England did not want a powerful Germany either, and when Russia was ready to enter the war Germany had to enter the war also in order to help Austria.

In this case France and England declared war on Germany in order to destroy the new German power.

Germany did win  the Russian war in a short time and Russia did surrender, then the war in the West carried on for 4.5 years with all the entire human disasters.

Had France and England not declared war on Germany in 1914 then it would not have become this terrible WW1 which caused the dead of 19 million troops, and terrible events in Flanders Belgium, it is history now.

The statement that the major European powers (France, Russia, England) were not really amused to see another player entering the game, Germany, strengthening after hundreds of years of weakening Kleinstaaterei, is for sure an important point.

However, the chronology was as follows:
Actually Austria-Hungaria declared war to Serbia and not Bosnia on July 28, when Serbia declined an investigation.
Due to Russia's unconditional commitment to Serbia to ally with Serbia in case of a conflict, Germany had given before a similar commitment to Austria-Hungaria. Therefore, Germany declared war to Russia on August 1.
During the state visit July 21-23, France had reaffirmed the French-Russian Alliance in case of a war with Germany - as a result, Germany declared war to France on August 3.
Germany bypassing the French fortresses and breaching the neutrality of Belgium and Luxemburg led to the war declaration of their guarantor power, Great Britain and it's dominions, on August 4.
During the war it became obvious that the war would have been lost without cutting off the transatlantic supplies to the British isles, leading to the "unlimited submarine war", which had the consequence of USA going to war in 1917 (and not the sinking of Lusitania in 1915).

IMHO the experience of the consequences of unconditional obedience of treaties against any kind of logic in WWI and WWII is still driving the politics from France and Germany. Something, which is perhaps not obvious to a power, which won the two WWs and never fought an external war in its mainlands - the recent Iraq wars and the resulting French/German reaction are a good example for that.
It is also one of the reasons, why a lot of people in Europe fear the worst with the recent increasing propaganda against Putin with regard to the Ukrainian civil war. Edited by BernieOnTour

Most nations commemorate the ending of wars.

Europe commemorates the beginning of them.

Strange.

Ending a war as victor far away from your mainlands is one thing...

Here, at least for France and Germany, it is more seen as: That was the starting point of all evil - never start something like that again!

We are remembering what happened 100 years ago, I presume we will have a day by day up date what happened   100 years ago, every day until 11th November 2018 then there will be a big commemoration to celebrate the centenary of the ending of WW1...

There is nothing to celibate in war, just remembering the fallen of all sides, this is an opportunity to really understand what happened every day for the duration of the war.

You really don't get it do you mate?

Is not commemorating the beginning of war but reflecting on the sacrifice people made on all sides of the divide, people like John Harper, first British casualty of WW1 who was aged 15 when he fell (lied about his age to join the army) the War To End All Wars? war is futile and a waste of life.... politics and religion anyone??

Due to the last 3 wars France had with Germany which toke place in  1880/81... in 1914/18 ...and in 1939/45. which produced terrible problems to their country.

As a result of this France is now politically closer to Germany than it was in the past with England.

Since the creating of the Euro-Union France and Germany are the two top European states, politically and commercially.

The previous misprint of 1880/81 (not 1870/71) was due to the blocked number 7 on the.keyboard.

The German Empire (created by chancellor Otto von Bismarck) after the 1870/71 war victory over France included the former French provinces of  Alsace & Lorraine and this changed the old power balance in Europe and that kept France isolated.

Serbia was incensed  by the Austria-Hungary annexation of Bosnia & Herzegovina, and in 1912/13 Serbia emerged territory in the Balkan Wars and Austria was concerned about it.

The killing of Austria Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28 1914 created the beginning of WW 1.

On July 28 1914 Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, 2 days later Czar Nicholas II of Russia ordered Russian military to support Serbia, and Russia did not agree when Germany did ask them not to get involved in it, thus on 1/8/2014 Germany declared ware on Russia. in order to help Austria

On 2/8/1914 Germany presented a note to Belgium demanding a passage to their territory, Belgium refused, the following day 3/8/1914 Germany declared war "officially" on France.

France was anxious to avenge the defeat of 1870/71 and recover Alsace & Lorraine, as a result France and Russia concluded a military agreement to come to each others help if either was attacked by Germany.

Germany was now aware about the fact that France in this case with Russia had declared war on Germany but it was of course not declared officially.

The UK declared war on Germany - 4/8/1914  and on Austria-Hungary - 12/8/1914

The US declared war on Germany 6/4/1917 and on Austria-Hungary 7/12/1917.

At the end of the Russian war massive German troops entered the western front and Germany thought they get the victory now, but the enter of the American forces on the western front changed the matter.

The 4 countries France, England, America, and Germany all decided to surrender, and the German forces still in France and Belgium returned home in a undefeated manner, America wanted a sensible surrender but it did not take place, because France and England wanted Germany  to get heavy punishments.

Thus after surrender Germany was badly treated, France occupied entirely the German Rhineland for many years, coal, foot, and many other items of were massively exported including billions of finance from Germany, and the German people suffered heavily and many died as a result of it.

The then German Government could not avoid those problems, and the public was looking for a different administration set up, eventually the result was the arrival of Hitler and the Nazi party and the end of the WW 1 punishment for the Germans caused the terrible WW 2.

Above in my report the date 2014 is 1914 of course  (a misprint)

The initial WW1. and the resulting WW2 would not have taken place if France and England would not have got involved in the Eastern War between Germany & Austria against Serbia & Russia, due to the killing of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria which took place in Sarajevo, Bosnia.

If the number 7 is still blocked on your keyboard, then you can (1) beg your government to unblock it, (2) clean your keyboard of breadcrumbs and dried snot, (3) visit the 7-eleven website and copy their '7' and paste it into your message, or (4) buy a new keyboard.

France had no choice but to get involved in the war in the east, because they were desperate to reconquer Alsace and Lorraine. Britain (not England!) might have contained Germany's naval and colonial ambitions without going to war, but their grandstanding over Belgium's neutrality forced their hand.

Alsace and Lorraine belonged initially to the Holy Roman Empire, but after the 30 years war 1618 to 1648 France gained the belongings of the two regions from 1648 to 1871  (223 years)

After winning the 1870 /1871 war Germany ruled the two regions until the end of WW 1 and France got the regions back in 1919 after 48 years.

During WW 2. Germany regained the two regions again in 1940 until 1944 and at the end of WW 2, France got the regions back again.

The language in Alsace is largely German, and the language in Lorraine is largely French and the two regions are both pro France and pro German, in addition France and Germany are now peaceful and friendly political partners.

You should have mentioned Great Britain, (not Britain) because Britain is only "England and Wales" Great Britain is "England, Scotland, and Wales", and the UK is England, Scotland, Wales, and

N.Ireland, and the past British Empire was then in full strength, and many troops from Empire regions came to WW 1.

London (England) was the ruler of the larger Great Britain, in the same way as Moscow (Russia) who after WW 1.created USSR and became the ruler of the massive USSR, and Berlin (Germany) was the ruler of the new powerful created German Empire.

King William II. of Germany, King George V. of England, and Czar Nicholas II of Russia were relatives (cousins) and visited each other many times, but later on they supported each others war.

WWI would not of taken place if the Austro-Hungarians had not declared war on Serbia for an act carried out by an individual not even a Serbian citizen. The war would not have spread if that vain and total fool who was Kaiser Wilhelm II had not of promised unconditional support to Austria-Hungary in their war against Serbia and any consequential war with Russia rather than trying to calm the situation. It was Germany that declared war on Russia, not vice versa and it was Germany that declared war on and invaded neutral Belgium thus bringing Great Britain into the war.

Germany gave their full backing to Austro Hungary without knowing what Austro Hungary would try to do to Serbia.

Then Austro Hungary issues a ulitimatum to Serbia, which they knew that Serbia would not accept and that Russia would give their full backing to them if Austro Hungary invaded Serbia.

The Germans didn't know about the contents of the ultimatum and they didn't know until the Kaiser read it on his yacht off the coast of Norway.

It was a good idea that you took out your first "para" (in your print above) because it indicated you as a nutter with bad manners.

Therefore bear in mind that should you disagree with printed matters from other fellows then just state your own opinion on the matter, and not insult them with bad manners.

Please note ...

It is obvious that WW 1.would not have started if Archduke Franz Ferdinand had not been killed, his killing took place on June 28.1914. after the killing Austro-Hungary initially asked Bosnia for an explanation about it, but Bosnia who was against its territory belonging to Austro-Hungary did not reply, Bosnia was known to be pro Serbia hence Austria's intention to attack Serbia.

On July 28.1914 Kaiser William II promised German support for Austria against Serbia.

Russia knew that Serbia was not able to deal war like with Austria hence Russia's support for Serbia, Austria was not able to to deal war like with Russia therefore asked support from Germany, Germany initially asked Russia not to get involved in the Austro-Hungary war with Serbia, but Russia denied, and that caused the German declaration of war against Russia.

On July 28 1914 Austria declared war on Serbia and since Russia' supported the war, Germany on August 1st. declared officially war on Russia,  On August 3rd Germany also declared war on France, because Germany knew France began to mobilize in order to help and support Russia.

On 4th.of August Germany declared war on Belgium and invaded same day, On the same day 4th.of August Great Britain declared war on Germany, thus the western war started and Germany began the invasion of Belgium to attack the French army and eventually the surrender of WW 1. toke place on 11.11.1918.

On June 28 1918 the Treaty of Versailles in France began, and Germany was heavily punished, as a result the Allied forces occupied part of Germany, and Germany lost the following regions ...

Alsace & Lorraine back to France ...  Eupen & Malmedy  given to Belgium ...  Northern Schleswig given to Denmark ... Hultchin given to Czechoslovakia ... West Prussia and upper Silesia was given to Poland.

In addition Germany was forced to export food, coals, and other materials to the western countries,

and also had to make massive financial payments for years, due to all of this the German people suffered heavily and as a result many died.

The German punishment from the Treaty of Versailles took place for many years and the then German government could do nothing about it, thus the German public selected eventually a government that could liberate the country, the eventual arrival was Hitler with the Nazi party and they started WW 2.

Thus the end of WW 1 created WW 2 but had the German punishment not been created as took place via the Treaty of Versailles then Hitler and his Nazi party would not have come into governmental power, and WW 2 would thus not have taken place.
