Human trafficking theory is now raised in surrogacy case involving nine infants with surrogate mothers

BANGKOK: -- Metropolitan police are investing into surrogacy cases involving nine infants with nine Thai mothers and one Japanese father as they are suspicious of the Japanese’s motive to have so many infants as it might be a human trafficking attempt or not.

So far the police have not charged any people involved but just sent all these infants to a state nursery for care while were questioning all the nine babysitters, and a 7-month pregnant woman.

The pregnant woman has confessed she also is a surrogate mother with the Japanese businessman as the man who promised to pay 300,000 baht for the surrogacy.

The nine babysitters also said they were paid 10,000 baht a month to take care of the infants whose ages ranging from three weeks to a year old.

A Thai man who claimed to be the lawyer of the Japanese businessman, now identified as Shigeta Mitsutoki, 24, claimed that the Japanese father wanted a big family because he is rich.

He said the Japanese father deposited money for all the babies at banks as their savings and also have insurance coverage for all of them.

He also took them to hospital for checks every month, the Thai lawyer said and assured all the babies have their birth certificates legally.

However the Lard Prao police who are in charge of the case said so far they did not see any birth certificates and wanted them to see where these babies were born at and on which month and dates.

They also said this case is very suspicious after Mrs Paveena Hongsakun, a former minister of human security, also came in to inquire and raised a possibility of human trafficking to the attention of the police.

She said she was told of gangs looking for spinal cords from babies for beauty treatment purposes.

The Japanese father was reported to have flown out of the country to Macao Thursday.

Shigeta Mitsutoki was alleged by the surrogate mothers to be the father of all nine children and also the one being carried by a 7 month pregnant surrogate mother at a condominium on Ladprao road also owned by him.

Police are eager to discover why the man’s travel records show him entering the country no less than 65 times in a period of two years. Police are also interested in discovering why most children born from surrogate mothers have been delivered prematurely between 7 – 8 months through caesarian section operations. Human trafficking is also suspected to a point to be investigated in the case, police said.

Meanwhile two doctors will face charges in the case of commercial surrogacy involving ‘Nong Gammy’, a boy born with Down syndrome.

One of the doctors is a professor of medicine.

He will be charged with performing the actual insemination which contradicts with the Medical Council of Thailand’s notices.

Another doctor is the owner/operator of the establishment. He will be charged for violating the Hospital Act.

President of the Medical Council of Thailand Prof Somsak Lolekha said Thursday that the surrogacy case involving ‘Nong Gammy’s mother by the professor of medicine is a direct violation of the Medical Council of Thailand’s notices which specify that assisted reproductive technology are to be employed only in a noncommercial manner.

Furthermore the surrogate mother has no relation whatsoever to the actual parents and an agent was used as a go-between.

The Medical Council of Thailand will be handing the case over to it ethics subcommittee which will convene on August 14.

The inquiry should take about a one month’s period but the council has no legal powers to terminate the clinic’s operations nor can they forbid the doctors from performing their duties.

Meanwhile, the director-general of the Department of Health Service Support, Dr Boonrueng Trairuang-worawattana, revealed today that investigation into S.A.R. Clinic, the clinic involved in the ‘Nong Gammy’ surrogacy case, shows a clear violation of Article 34 subsection 2 of the Hospital Act of 1998 which carries a penalty of one year imprisonment and a fine not exceeding 20,000 baht.

In the case of ‘Nong Gammy’, two doctors have been implicated which are the owner/proprietor and the professor of medicine who carried out the operation.

He further revealed that this clinic has performed more than 100 surrogacy operations in the past and an inspection of medical records is being carried out to ascertain if there were other nationals beside Thais have been using the surrogacy service of this establishment.

With regards to the meetings held to consider revisions of the Medical Council of Thailand’s governing clauses, the committee found that the new regulations are not much different from the earlier regulations.

The outstanding criteria in cases of assisted reproductive technology are that surrogacy cannot be performed if the parents and the surrogate mother are not directly related and no commercial agreement shall be used in cases of surrogacy.

Furthermore, surrogacy cannot be undertaken by same-sex couples or even unmarried male-female couples and medical institutions are also forbidden from acting as the go-between negotiating on behalf of parties intending to carry out surrogacy.

As I said when this story broke, there's more to come and there is , just where this leads is anybody's guess, but the jap guy with nine looks a bit suspicious ,maybe he likes lots of kids, makes him feel young, on the serious side , the Thailand authorities have been caught with their pants down , rules will now be introduced that will sort the chaff from the hay, however , how many little ones have been introduced into the world, with no love, just for one reason, now thats a worry.bah.gif

It is more than scary I seen it on TV, they said "it could be"  gangs looking for spinal cords from babies for beauty treatment purposes.

Horrible, so  those poor babies could be kind of human livestock, how on earth is it possible! sad.png

Or maybe or maybe not - as well as 'investing' into surrogacy cases.

An awful lot of supposition and an awful little fact. I'd hoped for some clarity after yesterday's article and today's articles only muddy the waters even more.

Do any of these media outlets have a journalist who can investigate and not just print BIB guesswork?

it could be.

It won't be.

What can you do with a spinal cord with respect to beauty? hang it around your neck?

It maybe the case that the placenta is used for stem cells harvesting and the babies are "by product".

More disturbingly it may be for organ harvesting at some time in the future.

It could also be that the Japanese guy is a Michael Jackson type person and just like kids?

Who knows?

Not necessarily a paedophile.

Lets not also get carried away with the word surrogate.

This means that the woman has a baby in her womb who is not naturally hers.

These kids could easily be the Japanese guys natural children with Thai mothers.

There are all sorts of financial reasons for "Farming Babies" but the spinal chord for Beauty treatment theory seems a bit of an obscure and wild stab in dark. I've never heard of that in my life, sounds like they are getting confused with Stem cells which you can grow in a Petri dish , you don't need the whole living breathing Human for those. Its horrifying enough if these kids were born to be used for anyone's sinister financial reasons, without printing complete rubbish like that
