The Nation

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn looks at the photographs.

BANGKOK: -- Former royal photographer Chamnong Bhirombhakdi compiles his most moving images into a book

In a gesture of appreciation to Their Majesties King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit and in celebration of the Queen's 82nd birthday, Chamnong Bhirombhakdi and Siam Paragon recently hosted an event to introduce "Bhirombharbbhakdi", a honorary photography book of never-before-published photographs of Their Majesties along with royal family members captured by Chamnong Bhirombhakdi, who followed Their Majesties along their royal duties.

More than 50 images were also put on display for a week earlier this month at the shopping mall's Lifestyle Hall.

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously presided over the launch.

"It was my great honour to serve Their Majesties the King and Queen closely as a photographer more than 30 years ago and to witness their tireless work to bring happiness to the Thai people and alleviate their problems. I feel personally grateful for their devotion to the country and wanted to express my gratitude and share my memorable experiences through this book," Chamnong said.

"It offers several important chapters of Thai history and everyone should study and learn the inspiring lessons and apply these to their own lives. Everything Their Majesties have done reflects their love and care for their subjects. Also, the book will be useful for future references and can inspire readers to do good deeds for themselves, family and the country."

Chamnong credits his father, Phraya, for instilling in him a passion for photography.

"My father always carried around a camera when I was young. Back then, his camera seemed so modern and I got interested. I wanted to take photographs, to be like my father. I can say that all of his three children, my two elder brothers, Vidya and Prachuab, and myself, became interested in photography because of him," Chamnong said.

Captain in big trouble
The Nation

30242105-01_big.jpg
Surveillance camera footage shows armed soldiers, who travelled in military vehicles, beating up three airmen who were working as bouncers at a Pathum Thani pub.

BANGKOK: -- An Army investigation is under way into a notorious incident in which a captain from a cavalry battalion and his armed men beat up three Air Force police moonlighting as bouncers at a Pathum Thani pub.

First Army Region commander Lt-General Theerachai Narkwanich said the unnamed captain would be subject to severe disciplinary action once the probe was complete, as he exploited his status to order armed troops under his command to travel in military vehicles to sort out a personal problem with the three airmen.

The incident on Tuesday made headlines in Thai-language media and featured details about the captain yelling about his ties to the "Eastern Tigers", the famous military units from the East that have seen three commanders become Army chiefs, including General Prayuth Chan-ocha, now the prime minister.

Theerachai said the incident was a personal problem of a few soldiers and had affected the image of the Army, which he said utilised tens of thousands of men in the military seizure of power and post-coup operations.

Their image was tarnished by a small number of men.

The captain and his men belong to the 30th Cavalry Battalion, from the Royal Guard, in Prachin Buri province.

The captain has said he and two subordinates visited the pub early Tuesday morning, and were told by the airmen to stop smoking.

He claimed the airmen harassed him and his men, and beat one of them up.

PM vows to resolve national energy problem

BANGKOK, 29 August 2014 (NNT) - Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha has pledged to tackle the energy problem according to a proper procedure and called on all sides to stop rallying. He reiterated that the martial law was enforced to maintain peace and order in the country.

Gen.Prayuth said on Friday night on television that the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) had tried to find solutions to the energy problem by arranging a forum where all sides could discuss the problem together. He stressed that the problem would be dealt with step by step and the energy forum would be continued.

After the new government is formed, the premier said he would expedite the policy on oil price with the objective to deal with the problem in the long run.

Regarding rubber price drop, the PM said it was caused by oversupply and fierce competition in the market. He said the NCPO was trying to help rubber farmers and suggested them cut costs in line with the lower price.

PM explains why he needs several military officers in his cabinet

8-29-2014-8-31-27-PM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha last night defended his decision to bring several military officers into his cabinet and asked critics not to pre-judge them.

In his weekly “Returning Happiness to the People” address, he argued that making several military officers cabinet ministers shouldn’t be a problem, saying that he had carefully thought out that their presence in the cabinet was necessary to ensure security.

He asked the public and critics not to be too suspicious of military officers otherwise there wouldn’t be good people willing to join the government.

“I am the one who made the decision. Whatever one said or whatever one proposed, let us wait and see and if anyone underperforms, he or she will be removed. The cabinet can be shuffled several times. Those who are not good enough will be weeded out. Whoever who are corrupted will go to jail. So why afraid? This is democratic process,” said Prime Minister Prayuth.

“I am not a party member. This is the party of all Thai people who will move forward. There is no opposition or the government. I want everyone to focus on national interest. Hence, we don’t want to see anyone to obstruct our performance of duty but would like to see more support from the public,” he said.

He admitted that sometimes he felt headache because there were so many proposals, so many issues that were accepted for consideration and discussions. “Anything that can be done will be done and that is my style of working,” he said.

NLA resolves to accept new insurance & life insurance draft laws

BANGKOK, 30 August 2014 (NNT) - The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) has resolved to accept two draft laws related to insurance and life insurance in Thailand.

During its session on Friday, 174 members of the NLA voted to accept a new insurance draft law, with four abstentions.

At the same time, 170 NLA members voted, with four abstentions as well, to accept in principle the life insurance draft law.

The new draft laws have been tabled for review as the shareholder and company’s board of directors structures stipulated in the Insurance Act, B.E. 2535 and the Life Insurance Act, B.E. 2535 are deemed unfit for the current business conditions.

Under current laws, if any insurance or life insurance company goes bankrupt, respective funds will only intervene to help affected policyholders after related legal procedures are completed. This means a lengthy process that prevent the funds from timely lending assistance to clients of the troubled company.

The NLA has resolved to set up a 15-member special committee to review both draft laws before they are brought before the assembly for deliberation and amendment in seven days.

Rainfall amount, reservoir levels, rivers' conditions accessible through iOS app

BANGKOK, 30 August 2014 (NNT) – The Department of Irrigation has launched an iOS application that allows users to access daily reports of the water situation in various locations nationwide as well as feeds from CCTV that allow them to view the water level in waterways.

Suthep Noiphairot, deputy director-general of the Irrigation Department, said on Friday rainfall over the Central, Northern and Eastern regions had been less than the average. However, the increase in rainfall during the latter part of August, which is expected to continue into September, meant that reservoirs should be able to acquire enough water for later use in agriculture.

In the meantime, an iOS application named WMSC has been created so those interested may monitor the water situation closely. The application provides data on rainwater quantity and reservoir levels. Users may also view the condition of various rivers through feeds from the Irrigation Department's cameras. The department is currently working on the Android version of the app.
