Just to let everyone know to be on the lookout for a little scam I got caught by this month. On the 22nd of August my AIS phone rang and I answered by simply saying hello. I then heard an automated "Khob Khun Kah" and the call was hung up. I was a bit suspicious but didn't really think too much about it.

A few days later I noticed that we were receiving an SMS message each day from the same number that called and hung up that day - 4264001. The SMS was in Thai so I asked the wife what it was. She took a quick look and told me to ignore it as it was just nonsense.

After a few more days, I asked her to look a little more closely and it turned out to be someone sending us lottery numbers. We don't do the lottery, so the wife gave AIS call.

Apparently we had agreed to receive the SMS's (I answered the call remember) and they were costing us 3 baht's each. I consider myself lucky that we only got stung for 10 days at 3 baht per day and that AIS agreed to put a block on them. Others may not be so lucky.

I wish I knew where to report stuff like this, but I don't, so I'll ignore it and move on. Sadly, that's exactly what the scammers want : -(

What you're saying doesn't add up, if it was a scam AIS would not be involved with it.

If AIS was able to tell you what the SMSs were about, how much they cost and was able to "block" them, then it must have been some kind of AIS sponsored or authorised marketing exercise. Therefore it would not be a scam as you suggest, why would anyone try to scam you for 3 baht a day?

If the only thing that happened when you answered the phone really was for a female voice to thank you in Thai and say nothing else how would you know that it was an automated voice that you are suggesting was the instigation of a scam? What's the difference between a recording of a woman saying thank you and the actual woman doing the same thing? Nothing, that's what a recording is.

There must be more to it than this.
