Ukraine crisis: 'Russia has launched a great war'

(BBC) Ukraine's defence minister has accused Russia of launching a "great war" that could claim tens of thousands of lives.

Russia dismissed the comments, saying they only pulled the Ukrainian people further into a bloody civil conflict.

The comments came after Ukrainian troops were forced to flee Luhansk airport in the east of the country amid an offensive by pro-Russian rebels.

Meanwhile, crisis talks between Ukraine officials, rebels and Russian envoys have broken up without agreement.

"A great war has arrived at our doorstep - the likes of which Europe has not seen since World War Two," Ukrainian Defence Minister Valeriy Heletey wrote on Facebook on Monday.

"Unfortunately, the losses in such a war will be measured not in the hundreds but thousands and tens of thousands," he added.

Big money driving big politics can only be shut down by a massive uprising of the common people.... which is highly unlikely to happen in this case, but, it is possible!

Ex-NSA Director and US intelligence veterans have written this open letter to Chancellor Merkel to avoid all-out Ukraine war ( one signatory – Ray McGovern was one of George W Bush’s top advisers )

We the undersigned are long-time veterans of U.S. intelligence. We take the unusual step of writing this open letter to you to ensure that you have an opportunity to be briefed on our views prior to the NATO summit on Sept. 4-5.

You need to know, for example, that accusations of a major Russian “invasion” of Ukraine appear not to be supported by reliable intelligence. Rather, the “intelligence” seems to be of the same dubious, politically “fixed” kind used 12 years ago to “justify” the U.S.-led attack on Iraq.We saw no credible evidence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq then; we see no credible evidence of a Russian invasion now.

BBC is trolling - "they" could refer to Russians, too, not only "comments".

This is not a great war, Putin could cruise through to Kiev with no issues in a week or 2 if he really wanted to

Well at least you looked at his interview.

You would think that Kiev would cook up some evidence of this invasion to support their claims... After all, they've been bleating about it since MH17 was shot down, but alas, no pictures, no bodies, no satellite intel... The sad part as noted above is that the western media just parrots whatever these people say without a shred of evidence...

NeverSure: Forget about it, just another U.S. basher taking any opportunity to get on their soapbox . . . regardless of how nonsensical they sound!

NeverSure makes his point and your point is also well taken but the guy is representative of the vast majority of U.S. haters and anti-U.S. campaigners.

The post was brief but is and remains a rant.

The "Huh?" post serves to point out this reality.

As do your post and mine respectively.

These people are way off center so they'll take all the rope that's handed to 'em.

The deeper these guys go in to a thread, the deeper the end is they fall into.

As much as I dislike the Russian governments and their gangster type leaders such as Putin (and most of their leaders in the past 100 years), the US, with all of its satellites, drones, U-2's, etc., should have ample proof (if there is any) of what Russian troops and vehicles are on the ground in the Ukraine. We must all know that Putin is just trying to make another grab for land and trying to get the old Soviet Union together again by any means but actual proof needs to be put out where the world can see it. Knowing the Russian history of violence and bullying of its neighbors (and their own people especially in the Ukraine when it was part of the Soviet Union over the past century) we, the more or less sane countries of the world must act somehow to stop them, hopefully peaceably. Putin was trying to throw around his weight with the nuclear comment a few days ago, but he must realize there are other countries that have these weapons too and no one (outside of the mad men in the Muslim minority or the weirdo in Pyongyang) would want to start something that could not be reversed and which would be the end of our world as we know it today. Let all of see the clear proof and then things can be settled, including executing the people that caused the downing of MH 370.- whoever they were!

Oh - and trust someone who was on George Bush's team after what he got us into for oil?? You gotta be kidding!

Speak for yourself.

Putin famously said that those who want to bring Soviet Union back have no brain. What is YOUR reason to understand it like that? Not really a question, just late night trolling, forgive me.
