BANGKOK: -- The Army Region 2 is eyeing the option of reclaiming state land from 'encroachers' in Ubon Ratchathani, Loei and Udon Thani.

The targeted areas include 1,600 rai (256 hectares) on the bank of the Mun River in Ubon Ratchathani province, some 10,000 rai in Phu Rua forest in Loei province and 1,000 rai in the Nam Som-Nayung forest in Ban Phue district of Udon Thani province.

The region's working team, led by chief of staff Colonel Sommai Budsaba, insisted on proceeding with their operation despite being subjected to threats.

Sommai said yesterday that his team had received a threat last month as they were trying to retrieve military land in Pak Chong in Nakhon Ratchasima. The 330 rai in Khao Nong Chuam, a mountain in Khanong Phra sub-district, had reportedly been claimed by some influential individuals, including a couple of senior police officers and a university lecturer.

Reclaim the land by all means but how about following up by those involved appearing in court with no regard to any position they may hold.

In fact the more important, senior or influential they are should be treated as aggravating the case.

It may create social unrest among people who have lived for years and generations, built houses, small shops and businesses on "state" land. These people are not "influential" people but just ordinary folk. Many of these areas are within the city boundaries of Ubon and Udorn.

They might soon come to Sakon Nakhon. I know of an American that build for his lassie a 3 million Baht house just a few meter from the lake (water reservoir). The American died last year and last month some government agencies came to visit her and asked her who approved the building so close to the damn as the land belongs to the government.

She is now looking for someone to buy the property but it might be knocked down including her 30 Rai's of Rubber Trees.
