Ukraine agrees 'permanent truce' with rebels in east

(BBC) Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko says he has agreed with Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone on a "permanent ceasefire" with rebels.

"Their conversation resulted in agreement on a permanent ceasefire in the Donbass region [the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk]," his office said.

"They reached a mutual understanding on steps leading to peace."

The announcement comes as US President Barack Obama meets Baltic leaders in Estonia ahead of a Nato summit.

Putin denies Ukraine ceasfire talk after Poroshenko issues statement on Russia agreement

RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin hasn’t agreed to reported ceasefire with Ukraine “because Russia is not party to conflict”, his spokesman says.

A statement issued earlier from Putin’s Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko stated that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to a “permanent ceasefire” in fighting engulfing the east of the ex-Soviet state.

But a spokesman for Mr Putin has denied that an agreement has been reached.

In a brief statement issued earlier, the Ukrainian president’s office said Putin and Poroshenko held a telephone exchange “that resulted in an agreement for a permanent ceasefire in Donbass (eastern Ukraine)”..

The brief statement gave no details and there was no immediate reaction from the Russia-backed separatists whom Ukrainian forces have been fighting since April.

DPR Deputy PM: Poroshenko Did Not Agree Ceasefire With Donetsk

DONETSK, September 3 (RIA Novosti) – Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s decision to call for a ceasefire in the country’s east is unilateral and no one has agreed with the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) so the ceasefire may be ignored, DPR First Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Purgin’s aide told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.

“This is some sort of a game by Kiev. This was completely unexpected. This decision was made without us,” Purgin’s aide quoted him as saying.
According to the aide, Purgin also called Kiev’s decision impractical for the DPR as long as there are Ukrainian troops in the republic.

"Their conversation resulted in agreement on a process for ceasing fire in the Donbass region."

There is NO truce agreement with Russia or the rebels to cease fire in the Dumbass region. Given Putin's complete lack of integrity to honor any agreement and propensity for deceit, NATO needs to immediately deploy to Ukraine's border with Russia to serve as a tripwire to further Russian incursions and military support to rebels similar to US troops on South Korea's border with North Korea. If Putin reallly wants a ceasefire, he'll need to do it in the open, having Dumas' approval, and personally before the world agree to a ceasefire. He has to put his ego on the line or he'll just continue on his grand imperial russian march into Europe.

They are just messing with him (Russians and rebels with Poroshenko). Putin says he is not a "party to the conflict" and rebels say no one agreed on anything with them.

Perhaps they want Poroshenko to ask rebels directly, something that would be very painful for his ego.

Ukraine's official line is that they are losing the war to Russians, it's hard to them to admit that they've been beaten by local amateurs, Donbass vatniks.

Karma is a bitch, after almost a year of dehumanizing their opponents the payback is ready for delivery.
