I would say if renting dont bother with the internet or agencies, decide which area you want to be then ride around on a motocyc looking for signs, often they might be fixed with wire or pasted to a lamp post, start calling numbers and you can be viewing 4-5 places in 1 day,

Ask noodle sellers about places for sale or rent.

How rural? 30 - 40 minutes to mall but up in the hills and out of town. Do you want power, water, internet? A roof that does not leak. Buying or renting, short term or long term?

Per all others here, you need to ride around the area looking for signs. They will be in Thai so best have your Thai GF riding pilion. Stop at the sign, check the phone, have her call.

Very few houses for sale or rent in rural areas.

The only people to live there are locals, with a trend moving to the bigger cities.

Houses tend to be wood that get torn down and rebuilt if the family move plots.

Land is often not owned, but assigned by the village head man.

In other words for local use only.
