Jack the Ripper identified through DNA traces: sleuth
AFP

LONDON - Jack the Ripper, one of the most notorious serial killers in history, has been identified through DNA traces found on a shawl, claims a sleuth in a book out on Tuesday.

The true identity of Jack the Ripper, whose grisly murders terrorised the murky slums of Whitechapel in east London in 1888, has been a mystery ever since, with dozens of suspects that include royalty and prime ministers down to bootmakers.

But after extracting DNA from a shawl recovered from the scene of one of the killings, which matched relatives of both the victim and one of the suspects, Jack the Ripper sleuth Russell Edwards claims the identity of the murderer is now beyond doubt.

He says the infamous killer is Aaron Kosminski, a Jewish emigre from Poland, who worked as a barber.

Edwards, a businessman interested in the Ripper story, bought a bloodstained Victorian shawl at auction in 2007.

The story goes that it came from the murder scene of the Ripper's fourth victim, Catherine Eddowes, on September 30, 1888.

Im glad that at least one source says that this was Jews from Poland not Polish citizen as most English sources due to political correctness says... Aaron Kosminski (Mordke) wasn't Polish from his family background (siblings of Aaron Mordke was named Pessa Elka, Hinde, Icek Szymche, Blimbe Laje), and they haven't been Polish citizens as there wasn't country such Poland between 1795-1918. They were Jews from family background.

What a poppycock story.......just to make some money.

I know who Jack the Ripper was, but you have to pay loads of money to tell you.

As I also know who killed John Kennedy.........but this is millions for you.

His theory relies on semen stains found on a shawl that was with the victim who worked as a prostitute. At best it proves he may have had (paid) sex with her sometime that evening. Now if they could find similar evidence at another crime scene.

I think it was the evil HG Wells or possibly Phileas Fogg (or his even eviler butler) that is the real Ripper (based on absolutely no proof whatsoever) !

I believe that I read somewhere (but I can't find the article) that the shawl actually didn't belong to the victim, but may have belonged to the actual ripper.

I think it was on Yahoo, but I can't find it now.

It does not identify the ripper, it only puts the man named, at the seen of the crime, She was a lady of the night, So many men could have left DNA on the shawl.

Mind boggles as to how the shawl got seamen on it. Pun intended.

DNA analysis of fourth victim’s shawl reveals Jack the Ripper was a Polish hairdresser gone mad
Guy Walters, The Telegraph

Like many, when I saw the news that Jack the Ripper had finally been identified, I thought, “Here we go again”. Who was the serial killer going to be this time? After all, the list of suspects contains the likes of Prince Albert Victor, the Duke of Clarence and even Lewis Carroll, so I was bracing myself for somebody really spectacularly silly; perhaps even Queen Victoria herself.

But as I read more about the story, it became apparent that this wasn’t some outlandish claim peddled by a money-grabbing junk historian.

In fact, it all seems very sensible.

In 2007, a businessman called Russell Edwards bought a shawl that was said to belong to Catherine Eddowes, one of the Ripper’s victims. Mr Edwards took the shawl to Jari Louhelainen, a senior lecturer in molecular biology at Liverpool John Moores, and a specialist in genetics and forensics.

Using a process called “vacuuming”, Dr. Louhelainen was able to extract enough DNA from bloodstains on the shawl to match the DNA taken from Karen Miller, a direct descendant of Jack the Ripper’s fourth victim Catherine Eddowes. Even more excitingly, Dr. Louhelainen was able to find some seminal fluid, from which he was also able to obtain some DNA.

OK, now explain what country a "Jew" comes from. You seem to forget being a "Jew" is a religious tag, same as being a "catholic" or "muslim."

'... the infamous killer is Aaron Kosminski ...' Was, unless he has been reincarnated. And apart from the fact that it would need DNA from a known blood relative of a suspect in order to make the comparison, it still doesn't prove beyond all, nor even reasonable, doubt that the suspect was the killer.

I think it was on Yahoo, but I can't find it now.

The thinking is that the shawl was quite elaborate and expensive, so unlikely to have belonged to the victim, and it must have been brought to the scene by the ripper. If the shawl was indeed brought by the ripper, then Aaron Kosminski is most probably Jack the Ripper.

Why would he have bought a woman's shaw to the murder scene. Was he a chilly cross-dresser?
