Visa from old passport to new passport

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a Non O Multiple entry visa that is valid until 31 August 2015, the problem is my passport will expire November 2015.

Can I enter Thailand start of August with only 3 month passport validity left? Or do I need to get a new passport 6 month before my old passport expires?

If I do need to get a new passport do I need to transfer my old visa into my new passport, and if so what will be the procedure?

Cheers!

Marc

Dependent upon your nationality you only need a passport with validly equal to your allowed stay to enter Thailand.

But you cannot enter any nearby country with only 6 months left on your passport.

Many counties recommend you apply for a new passport when you have only 9 months of validity left.

When you get your new passport you will use your old passport to show your visa on entry to the country. Visas cannot be transferred to a new passport.

Thanks a lot Ubonjoe!

Are you sure the visa cannot be transferred, thinking the non transfer only applies to an extension of stay

You have it reversed.

Extensions of stay can be transferred because they are done by immigration.

Visas issued by an embassy or consulate cannot be transferred.

I recently renewed my US passport and they gave me a notice with it that Visas will not be transferred by immigration. This means if you have a multiple non-imm the unused ones will not be transferred and you will have to redo them out of country. Your original Visa entry information and your current permission of stay information are transferred.

No visas are never transferred. You would use your new passport along with the old passport to show the visa if it is still valid for use.

If you are here on an extension of stay, immigrations will put handstamps in your new passport with any information that will be required by them in future.

When I recently got a new passport, they put in three handstamps with handwritten notation re: my long expired O-A visa that I used many years ago to enter the country, the date & place where I then entered the country and the third was my current extension of stay information. That's all the information immigrations might want in future (along with re-entry permit information, if I had one).
