extending stay after leaving country

Featured Replies

Hi there. I arrived in Thailand by air on a polish passport and received 30 days in the country free of charge. I am planning to travel to Myanmar by land for 28 days, then return to Thailand by land. After the month in Myanmar, I'd like to spend another 2 months in Thailand. What are my options for extending/obtaining a visa? I heard about going to Savannakhet in Laos to get a double entry for Thailand, which I am open to do, but I am hoping to get some insight here. I already have a Burmese visa so I would be going there in 2 weeks when my 30 days in Thailand run out. Please advise. Thank you.

You could get a single entry tourist visa at the Thai embassy in Yangon that would give you a 60 day entry that can be extend for 30 days at immigration.

If not you would get 15 days entering by land or another 30 days by air when you return to Thailand. Both can be extended for 30 days at immigration.

A 2 entry tourist visa in Laos if you wanted to before making your trip.

I thought immigration changed the rules AGAIN the other week, allowing a 30 day entry stamp by air or land?

Their was no change to the visa exempt rules. Only those from G7 countries and those on bilateral agreements get 30 days at the border.

The 30 day extension for exempt entries started on August 29th.

Thanks. Doesn't apply to me, but I knew I'd read something recently about back-to-back border crossings.

There are restrictions on doing back to back crossings but the OP'S trip does not fit those guidelines.

Thank you for the quick reply. Ubonjoe, if I get the double entry in Laos before my trip to Myanmar how long would that give me in Thailand?

Also, would anyone know about the costs of either option? Again, many thanks.

There is no charge for visa exempt entries.

A tourist visa costs 1000 baht per entry. You get 60 days for each entry that can be extended for 30 days at immigration.

If you got a 2 entry visa you could get a re-entry permit (1000 baht) at immigration for your trip to Myanmar that would keep your 60 day entry valid when your return. Then do the 30 day extension of it and then use the 2nd entry .

A 2011 blog post states that a flight into Thailand is needed in order to get a visa for Thailand in Yangon. As I am planning to cross overland, ...any insights on whether this policy has changed?

Myanmar embassy does not require a flight ticket to issue a visa.

Paz sorry if I was unclear. I am asking about the Thai embassy in Myanmar, in order to issue a visa for Thailand.

Sorry I don't understood.

From reports in this forum, not needed.

Single entry from myanmar does seem your sensible option as running to Savannakhet is not super cheap or fun unless you really need the benefit of double entries that they can issue.

If you flew back from myanmar you would get another 30day visa excempt & then could extend that for 30 days at cost of 1,900Bt.

Single entry tourist from myanmar would be my choice due to low cost & low hassle as long as they issue them reasonably easy.

If they need flight ticket it quite easy put one together for printing from prebooking on flight search sites.

Hopfully someone can give you up to date info on thai visas from myanmar ...
