Wanted: Tropical beach with sunshine in mid-october.

Depends how much tourist infrastructure you need. The Philippines and Indonesia both have far better beaches and islands than Thailand but lack the (relatively) user-friendly transport, comforts and amenities. Each of us has different requirements.

The Andaman coast (Phuket, Khao Lak, Krabi) often gets a lot of rain in October. Your chances are somewhat better at the Gulf coast, especially Hua Hin which has what they call a micro climate, comparatively not much rain. But it remains a gamble, good luck.

Public beaches in Thailand could be quite dirty (understatement)...

If you can afford go to a private resort (ie: Club Med)

Quite tricky predicting weather so far in advance and TH will still be in rainy season.

BTW, Indonesia, Maldives, Malaysia, Philippines could be nice

So does anyone know how the weather is in Ban Krut right now? It's a very long journey from Chiang Mai and I'd hate to take my kid on his school holiday and be stuck indoors all day.

i'm going down that way on thursday from sukhothai and have just checked

the weather.

thursday 50-50

friday 100 rain

sat sun mon -good with slight chance of rain.

but check it out your self its very easy, there are more

than 100 weather sites .

Thanks for all the inspirational replies. My trip will be confined by the borders of Thailand this time but love all the suggestions.

Have made some plans to be in Cha-am on the coming Sunday and see how it goes from there. Ban Krut/Bang Saphan area has been interesting me for a while as well. Apparently a place to be at these days?

Ban Kruit/Bang Saphan are very interesting places. Kruit is very small with hardly anything to do and only a few restaurants. I love it, but some might get bored after 4-5 days.

Saphan is much bigger, but also in a bit of a bay, so the beaches are not as nice and the water not as clear. But many restaurants, hotels, etc. And an island off shore where you can do a day trip.

Though a bit expensive, we also liked Khao Lak a lot.

Koh Larn is a great call, learn Chinese and get run over by a Jetski too.

Exactly. What a dump. I prefer Koh Chang for relatively quiet beaches and lifestyle (jet skis are banned there). Easy to get to by car and there is a ferry to the island. Prices are reasonable too. You may have to learn Russian though. LOL.
