bina
its not sex, its dominance play (mounting is a way of determining dominance and your kids will obviously be the 'submissive' puppies in the pack) and will become a behavioral problem so>>> keep him busy by playing with him, start training him now! , poodle are smart dogs and like to use their brains... u can castrate now also... check out other threads about behavioral problems, and castration of males... mounting is NOT for sex drive... males will mount outher males to prove themselves, as will females on other females, females on males etc... male dogs want sex only with females in heat, the rest of the time its learned self stimulation and play. rmember, a tired dog is a happy dog with less behavioral problems... so play with him, pay attention to him , teach him fun things to do etc. nienke can give some ideas... Nienke
nienke can give some ideas... Yo, thanks! Ok, a 4 months old poodle that loves to mount . Most probably you are dealing with a pup with an overdose of testosterone (from now on T) . Mounting is certainly related to sex, or rather, re-production. Because the more dominant ones, or highest ranks, are allowed to re-produce. The poodle is practising for later Neutering at such a young age is, I think, not advisable (see the article I've written on this subject on my website www.luckydogs.info), unless you (the owner) are confident and capable of providing (and in this I agree totally with Bina) the pup with a proper education. This is important with every pup, but for one with such an over-dose even more. The 'problem' with T is that when a dog or human wins it will produce more T, providing the state of victory. With this extra T, one feels strong and confident enough to win again and again. This is scientifically proven on tennis players Now, the dog is trying out all sorts of behaviors, which is completely normal and natural. Does he has success he will do it again, but if there is no success than the behavior will stop. After all, why doing something that doesn't give any benefit or scares the heck out of you (we people can learn a lot from dogs ) Therefore, the pup needs to be taught what behavior is desired and what is not, it need to be taught bounderies. Dogs that haven't been taught bounderies and the norms and values of human society, will make their own bounderies. And that's usually not what we desire. In the poodle's case, all mounting on humans should be a no-no. You can teach him something that doesn't go together with the mounting, such as a SIT or DOWN. DOWN is even better as it is a submissive posture. It's important to be consistent in this. Naturally, this should be done through positive reinforcement. Always reward the desired behavior. Dogs with a lot of T, can finally take force and punishment as a challenge, often resulting in aggression. And than sudddenly the dog is mean ... But than mean dogs aren't born, they are made!
