People with just one Thai parent can now join military

BANGKOK: -- Under a new regulation approved by the Defence Council, a person can pursue a military career even if just one of his or her parents is Thai.

Before this amendment, it was mandatory for anyone wanting to join the Thai armed forces to have two Thai parents. Defence Ministry spokesman Colonel Kongcheep Tantrawanich yesterday announced that the Defence Council had approved the amendment to boost people's opportunities to enter military service. Police officers, public prosecutors and judges already only need to have one Thai parent to qualify for the job.

However, Kongcheep said the nationality rule could be stricter for officials tasked with key missions such as commanding a military aircraft.

With just one Thai parent. This sounds like the HBO TV drama The Wannsee Conference, where they were figuring out the genetic qualifications.

During apartheid in Sth. Africa a colleague of mine in Hong Kong was planning his leave and stopover destinations back to Britain.

He wanted to visit Sth. Africa but being married to a HK Chinese lady thought their might be problems. He checked up and found absolutely nothing to worry about as she was Chinese and had " Honorary White ' status.

So "Thainess" still rules out that my Thai son can command a Royal Thai Air force plane!

Hmm, well don't be surprised that if he has dual nationality he won't be able to serve in the forces at all, and that most Government jobs may be out too. This applies in most countries as it's all about not having two allegiances.

I was fortunate because my parents were wise to this and didn't get other nationalities for me and left it for me choose. When the crunch question came and I wanted a specialised job, I was in the clear. I've not taken up the additional nationalities although I could still do so and could have multiple passports. Now I'm retired I keep on thinking of changing nationality but every time I look into what's attracted me, the grass isn't as green on the other side of the fence.

Nationality is a complex, sharp and double edged sword. There are disadvantages as well as benefits.

Wow. They might actually be able to raise a real " Intelligence Corps ".

I suppose that's the other way to look at that headline. biggrin.png

When I first saw that headline, I thought maybe they were going to allow hermaphrodite kids from ladyboys in! clap2.gifclap2.gifclap2.gif

Another view, after reading the article, is that it's a way to increase conscription numbers.

Except in the USA (barf).... Kenyan father & American Mammy = Akaonekana Rais (that's Swahili for the President).

Yeah.......... I'm American.

You should have seen the grilling I got once from a CIA C^nt when I was trying to get a base installation pass in Kuwait years ago. (I was born in Orlando).

Have a Filipina Ex & a Thai wife & had been to CHINA [gasp]! And Algeria & 40 some odd other stamps in my passport.

Why were you in ______? All mostly for work.

I REALLY wanted say "To smoke dope" when she got to Holland, & say "To look at topless babes on the beach & visit brothels" when she got to Spain, but just said I was passing thru.

Next she asked me (not making this up), "Are you a terrorist or have you ever participated in any terrorist activities?"

No.

"Do you consume, or you know anybody that consumes alcohol in Kuwait?"

No.

I'm surprised my nose didn't jump 3 feet straight forward on the booze question.

I got pulled to the side at Heathrow once by a very polite cop wearing a vest & gun & such, and after a 20 minute Q&A he let me be on my way. It's impossible to look more Caucasian and harmless than I look.

How STUPID can governments be? Thai, US, UK, Kuwait.....doesn't matter. I have no use for them.

Sorry. Rant over.

How stupid. A THAI boy who has only ONE nationality, THAI, but one foreign parent, and who has lived all his life in Thailand, is not fit to fly an Air Force jet? Again Thailand is depriving itself of talent. Without meritocracy, Thailand will continue to be a third world country on par with Cambodia, Laos and a whole lot of African countries.

But thankfully there's nothing stopping him doing so wherever you come from for a considerably higher wage & with reliable maintenance of any of the necessary equipment. Their internal education is very good too and they'll learn to drive properly! smile.png

Which is very common in most countries....

In Australia as long as you are a citizen, you can join the military, fly jets in the airforce, command battle ships and even become chief of the defence force and prime minister even if your mum is Thai. Sounds like Thailand considers Luk Kings as 2nd class Thais and they can join the military but will only be foot soldiers and cannon fodder to be used down south thus not putting the lives of the real Thai's in danger.

They can't fly military aircraft - they have to set in the back. Which lunch counter do they eat at.

Not with the real Thai's they will be segregated into the lowlife mess. They won't be treated equally and Thailand was wondering why it didn't get a seat on the U.N human rights council. Edited by chooka
