Travel and stay in Thailand for a year more or less. I'm a type 2 diabetic. Using pills (amaril, glucophage and Lantus injections. How available are this medications and general treatment for diabetic in LOS wai.gif

Glimepiride is available. Several brands, including Amaryl.

Metformin is available. Several brand, including Glucophage. That produced by the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO) is substantially cheaper.

Lantus is also available.

All three are Category D drugs. A first class pharmacist must be present, though no prescription required. In practice this means large pharmacies and hospital pharmacies.

Plenty of type 2 diabetes in Thailand, so doctors are familiar with the condition and treatment options.

the locally produced metformin is effective and much cheaper than glucophage...recommended.

I am type 2 and control my blood glucose with 2 x 850 metformin during the day (one before before meals) and a 15 unit injection of mixtard 30 before bed...all of which are available OTC, even in the boonies...gives me a good fasting BG reading in the a.m. and a controlled spike during the day...no rice or other nasty carbs, just veges and lean meat...mama noodles or toast for breakfast...

don't let it beat ye...ever onward to victory...

I'm pretty sure mama noodles and toast both fall into the category of "nasty carbs".

try both then check your BG 2 hrs later and you may be pleasantly surprised presuming the usual work type activity (driving to work, circulating around the office, checking emails, etc) to follow yer breakfast...I was surprised too...

even had Skippy peanut butter (+sugar) to boot with the toast...

close BG monitoring is the key: if it don't give a good BG reading then try something else...I love khao tom muu but it is poison...left over pizza for brekkie ain't half bad, check it out...the proof is in the BG reading 2 hrs later...

I have been taking Siamformet 850 mg twice a day. But i started gaining weight 6 moths ago. I was 94kg now 101kg. I read about injecting Mixtard 30 at night for 24 hours control. Can i do this on my own in Thailand or i need see a diabetes doctor first. I just tool my glucos reading its 10pm and i had dinner and coffee at 9pm reading was 343. I have checked blood in morning before any food or drink and its usually 120. Any suggestions are appreciated.

mixtard 30 available OTC most places in Thailand...

no one using medication should EVER see a BG reading of 343 mg/dl...this indicates very poor blood glucose control/bad diet and if continued expect the usual circulation problems to occur, kidney problems, etc...you should check BG at least 4-5 times daily until you establish reasonable control an not just fasting BG in the morning...

I went for 13 years with poor control after diagnosis with type 2 and now have bad neuropathy in hands and feet, erectile dysfunction and the beginning of kidney problems...I still test 3 times daily even though now I rarely test above 150 mg/dl...

google for advice under strict diabetic blood glucose control...
