Yes, I would want to train a หมาเฝ้าบ้าน to keep away from my house anyone who would use the term สุนัข for dog other than perhaps in formal writing. I also see now there is an actual Thai word for Alsation which I got totally wrong. Either way, I got it all figured out. Thanks again everyone! champa Posted October 31, 2014 Share Posted October 31, 2014 (edited) Polite is สุนัขเฝ้ายาม Normal is หมาเฝ้าบ้าน In thai we do not say สุนัขเฝ้าอาคาร Because อาคาร is building. The Lexitron dictionary gives two alternative translations for guard dog: สุนัขเฝ้าอาคาร and สุนัขเฝ้าที่พัก. Clearly the expression does exist, even if it's not commonly used.
