One World Trade Center open for business

NEW YORK: -- More than 13 years after the original towers were destroyed in the 9/11 attacks, New York's World Trade Center has re-opened for business.

Employees at publishing giant Conde Nast are starting to move into the 104-storey One World Trade Center.

The $3.8bn (£2.4bn) skyscraper took eight years to build and is now the tallest building in the US.

It is 60% leased and the government's General Services Administration has signed up for 275,000 square feet.

"The New York City skyline is whole again," Patrick Foye, executive director of the Port Authority, which owns the restored site, said in a statement.

The 1,776ft (541m) tall skyscraper is at the centre of the site, which includes a memorial in the footprints of the old towers and a museum, opened this year.

Only took 13 years! And most secure office building in America? Did those people try to come in through the front door on that day?

...I read that it was 'a hard sell'....people reluctant to move in...what is the occupancy rate....60%......???

...kind of morbid when you think about it....

Took a long time to fix that hole in the ground .I would think they would have guns mounted on top for the number one target in the USA .whistling.gifwhistling.gifwhistling.gifwhistling.gif

What do you want, a 50-mile radius no-fly zone over every major US city with anti-aircraft missiles, guns, and lasers on rooftops? Or should there be buildings no higher than five stories?

The Twin Towers did not collapse because of aircraft strikes but because of the heat created by the aircraft fuel which weakened the building’s structural steel frame. The Twin Towers actually had been designed for aircraft impact but the fire control and communications systems were poorly protected. Fire suppressing personnel couldn’t reach the struck floors because they had to battle people evacuating down the stairs that became gas chambers of toxic smoke.

One Trade Center is fortified against truck bombs; one-meter-thick concrete walls encasing the elevators and stairwells as well as communication and safety systems’ extra-wide, pressurized stairwells; a dedicated set of stairwells exclusively for the use of firefighters; and biological and chemical filters throughout its ventilation system.

And of course there is the strenghtened airport and aircraft security, etc. But we don't live in a perfect world and there is always a risk just leaving your bed.

It's not the same. Too late, but I don't think they should have built a skyscraper there at all. I understand it was a very "American" response to do so, but I can't relate.

Your information is wrong........amazing you can cut and paste..........Don't babble if you don't know the facts.

I would never work in that building. Terrorists are lining up to attack it again.

Having worked in the old WTC and surrounding area for several years, it was an amazing place to work. Incredible vibe, great location, great transportation options, great food!

Unfortunately, terrorists are lining up to attack many places around the world. It's a crazy world now.

Things are different now. There wasn't any real airport security then in that age of innocence, and there was no readiness on the part of the military.

The buildings had a different construction. As someone pointed out the planes didn't knock the buildings down. The heat from the jet fuel fires weakened the steel and then they collapsed. All of the structure above the collapsing parts came down like a sledgehammer and flattened them. Once falling the kinetic energy of the falling parts took them all they way to the ground.

I don't believe they would have built this if they don't believe it would take the force and heat of an airliner and still stand there.

(Actually it is the cheese in a mousetrap just waiting for someone to try it.) tongue.png
