Works quite well for people I know who have it.

But the OP is going to need three years of uninterrupted extensions, tax payments on 80k, and three years work permits.

Works for what? To necessitate a work permit anyway, to necessitate re-entry permit and yearly confirmation, to NOT be issued an ID card under the pretense of a software bug? I think that the toilet-like paper of the residence book represents pretty well they practical value it has.

Here's a post from Arkady that summarize pretty well the situation

For some years applicants for PR with a Thai wife have been asked to provide a picture of themselves on the marital bed with their Thai wife. Immigration staff have alse been known to come to the marital home with or without an appointment and ask questions of household servants about whether you really sleep in the same room or not. One of my friends told the story of them arriving unannounced and trying to grill their Burmese maid on these matters. The only problem was that the maid could speak English but hardly a word of Thai. If you have Thai children, you will be asked for DNA evidence of paternity, even though having Thai children doesn't qualify you for a discount, if you no longer have the Thai wife, and, in reality, make no difference to your application at all.

Citizenship applications, because they are processed by Special Branch, not Immigration, are mercifully free of the more superfluous requirements imposed on PR applicants by Immigration.

2 year work permits, getting a loan from a bank, path to citizenship. Stability and not needing to leave the country if you lose your job.

One person I know contracts to an offshore company, another is a housewife now bringing up kids. They are pretty happy to call Thailand 'home'

No need for annual reporting if you don't go anywhere, and the reporting is only to get a reentry permit. Even Australia requires return resident visas for PRs <deleted>.

Amen Brother! I've had mine since May 1996....It was worth it for me! And it was in my hand in only 7 months to boot!

There are lots of things about PR that suck as there are with many aspects of dealing with Immigration in Thailand and most other countries too.

But if you plan on staying in Thailand for a long time - apart from citizenship which is not an option for many - PR is the solution that sucks the least.
