Apec summit: World leaders gather in Beijing

(BBC) Leaders from China, Russia, Japan, the US and other Asia-Pacific states are in Beijing for a two-day summit.

Bilateral meetings between top leaders will take place on Monday, followed by a formal leaders' summit on Tuesday.

There is speculation Chinese leader Xi Jinping could meet his Japanese counterpart, Shinzo Abe, for the first time, after months of tension.

The meeting comes as China looks to underline its growing status as regional leader and economic giant.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (Apec) summit is the biggest event hosted so far by Mr Xi, who took over the Chinese presidency in March 2013.

Leaders from the 21 Apec member nations are attending the Beijing talks.

Both US President Barack Obama and Russia leader Vladimir Putin will deliver speeches later in the day.

When will we hear from The Nation that 20 leaders congradulated Thailand on saving it from the perils of democracy?

Or maybe we'll have a Dusit poll conducted with one leader (5% of the population!) to conclude that 95% of Apec leaders agree with how the Thai government is proceeding with a its reforms.

Apec Trivia questions: Of the 21 nations, how many have martial law in effect?

Of the 21 nations, how many want the yuan to become the global currency?

The significance of this cannot be understated.

Last year the CCP same same party and state media made it clear Xi Jinping would never ever deal with Japanese PM Shinzo Abe, much less meet with him. Yet here they are shaking hands. Xi said nothing during the greetings, but they did speak in private.

Prez Obama's fingerprints on Xi's still twisted arm are almost visible in the photo.

This is a serious hit to the PLA, the equivalent of a swift kick to the lower front of the PRC military which has been salivating for a lightening military strike to seize disputed islands in the East Sea from Japan's control. It also reassures everyone that the CCP Boyz still have control over the PLA's wild warlord generals.

It's also a severe setback if not the destruction of the CCP's design to try to separate the US from its treaty allies and friendly governments in the Indo-Pacific strategic region.

The CCP Boyz in Beijing have had to swallow hard on this one, in part because of the extremely and widespread negative reactions throughout the region to their belligerence and bellicosity towards neighboring countries, from the East Sea and Japan to the South China Sea and the several affected Asean countries, to border disputes against India.

Well, it’s a start.

After years of tensions over disputed territory, disputed history and visits to a certain shrine, China and Japan drew closer to establishing a more functional diplomatic relationship with a handshake on Monday between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Beijing.

As the video bellow suggests, the encounter was a tad on the chilly side, with Mr. Xi apparently refusing to return his counterpart’s greeting and looking throughout the photo op as if he’d rather be shaking hands with one of the goats that are said to be stripping the aforementioned disputed Diaoyu/Senkaku islands of their scant vegetation.

Anyone that thinks Asia welcomes the USA as it did in the past is as clueless as the sailors who believes the bargirls in Phuket really love them whenever the USS ships gives shore leave to their serviceman and the girls ripped them off their cash

Asia has long looked at USA as an easy payout station and in its own desire to have influence ...at times they have not been savvy and understandably so as they have their fingers in every pie they can stick it to instead of of focusing on something

Like a long distance relationship that is fraught with mistrust, it's much easier to engage someone that is constantly here. In this region the proxy for USA, Japan used to do that role well and it's waning in its influence.

Much as there is some distaste in the initial diplomacy of China, it does not take a practical Asian government long to realize the economic benefits of trading with a giant right at your doorstep and ignoring it for USA is foolishness

The body language is clear. China is in charge and it's frosty. Japan can chit chat all you like and we will talk to you because its befitting of 2 nations of equal standing in a region to at least pretend to be cordial. In Chinese language there is a phrase used to described this ...it's call using dogs eyes to look down on you and that is exactly what Abe got that day.

Putin does that regularly to USA and you still have to engage it as you cannot ignore it

The only tell tale marks of your president is in his happiness to be in Asia where he can lick his wounds from his humiliating mid term defeat where his governance and leadership style is rejected and for a moment he is relaxed from the hounddogs of the media and that is why he is laughing so much

China is not Palestine ...the USA policies has limited influence here

The reality is that the CCP Boyz in Beijing know that in order to become a global power they must first become a regional power which will not happen.

It will not happen because the region has Japan and India which the CCP are recklessly menacing militarily and diplomatically over territory it claims to be the rightful inheritance of Chinese emperors (a good number of which were Mongrels Mongols).

The region also has South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, Australia, Asean. Several Asean countries are the target of the CCP's brute force and economic corruption. The CCP Boyz are unable to dominate or persuade any one of these and other countries of the region to include Asean.

Five of the countries are US national security allies: Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Australia, Thailand. Singapore is a major US Naval facility and a virtual national security ally of the US.

How's all that for focus.

None of this is addressed when one resorts to rhetoric about dog's eyes, payout stations, hound dogs, bargirls, licking wounds, Putin, Palestine or whatever other diversions. One needs instead to explain Chinese vices such as dictatorship, censorship, indoctrination, statism, cyber theft, intellectual property theft, the rule of men over the rule of law; Marxism, systemic and endemic massive corruption as a way of life and a proliferation of other negative traits and characteristics that are disqualifiers to regional and global leadership.

From your post concerning the Chinese view of Japan and the Japanese and of Xi's icy cold meeting with Japanese PM Abe.....

Well that certainly is cordial of you! All the same, it clearly looks like PM Abe of Japan won this one at the APEC meeting yesterday in Beijing.

Isn't it true btw that the schools of the PRChina teach that Japan and the Japanese are the enemy of China and the Chinese people?

The fact is the CCP's national curriculum teaches that Japan and the Japanese are the enemies of China and of the Chinese people.

You say Abe got "dog's eyes" from Xi Jinping. I do see "dog's eyes" in the photo above but Xi wasn't even looking Abe in the eye, which I know, yes, is an East Asian trait or cultural characteristic.

The fact is Xi through his CCP and PRC media had been stating since last year that Xi would not deal with Abe at all, ever. Abe had been unsuccessfully seeking a personal meeting with Xi since Abe came to office in December 2013 and hadn't ever got one. It was Washington that twisted Xi's arm to have this meeting. No, China is not in charge.

Look at the photo. Go to the link to view the one-minute video. Then get back to me, okay?

The Trans-Pacific Partnership of 10 Asia-Pacific countries which will become the world's 2nd richest & productive trading bloc is in its final stage of negotiation.

The ten countries of the Trans Pacific Trade and Investment Partnership account for $27 Trillion of global GDP, 26% of global trade and 800 million people.

The ten countries of the TPP are the US, Japan, Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, Chile and Peru. South Korea has begun sitting in on the negotiations with the expectation it will become the 11th Partnership member with more to join down the line.

Neither China nor Russia are invited and the same is true of India.

Here's the TPP in brief:

TPP market snapshot
  • GDP: US$27,750 billion (2013)
  • GDP per capita: US$34,752 (2013)
  • Population: 798.5 million (2013)
  • TPP % of world GDP: 37.5% (2013)
  • TPP % of world population: 11.2% (2013)
  • TPP % of world trade: 25.0% (2013)
map-tpp.png

Map of TPP countries.

The Trans Pacific Partnership For Trade and Investment will complement the Trans Atlantic Partnership For Trade and Investment between North America and the European Union which is currently in negotiations begun last year.

20130427_USD000_0.jpg

The Trans Atlantic Partnership will increase the size of the EU economy around €120 billion (or 0.5% of GDP) and the US by €95 billion (or 0.4% of GDP). This would be a permanent increase in the amount of wealth that the European and American economies can produce every year.
The EU and the US produce 50% of global economic output and are mutually invested at €5 Trillion. The TPP would provide €2 billion per day of trade flows and account for 15 million new jobs annually.
Neither Russia nor Brazil are invited.

The US and EU are the largest trading partners of most other countries in the world and account for a third of world trade.

There is some belief that the TPP and the TAP indicate a moving away from the World Trade Organization in favor of regional trade groupings.

Lol, who really cares. Don't you just agree that we should let Putin and Obama arm wrestle for China. More manly than a golf match, although Putin is pretty short. We just need to elect a manly President. Someone over 5'10" should be able to take Putin and we could have China. Isn't that what all this I am better than you stuff is really about? Penis/short man envy type syndrome?

Fact, Russia, China and US is full of great people that only want a better life for themselves and their loved ones. All of these whinny, complainers who constantly want to blame others are the problems and need to look inward for the solutions, not outward.

It's actually the leaders attending this that have a clue. The incessant I am better than you whinners are the clueless.

I really feel sorry for all them so desperate to leave. I actually dated a beautiful, wealthy, independent girl from Shanghai before I married my wife in 2010. She lived here in the States and was a computer tech person for a large company, she was the one you call at 1:00 am when you get hacked or a system goes down.

She had a super cool home and set up her gas wok cooking system in the garage. Best cook and one of the sweetest girls I have known. My preference is that blond hair, blue eyed, long legged Russian look so I married one . . . Just personal preference thingy.

Anyway, my observation is that when Chinese become wealthy or able to financially, they purchase property in America, move to America and stop buying Chinese products. When Americans get wealthy, they also stop buying Chinese products, but they don't buy property in China and move to China. They stay in America. Hmmm . . .

Your observation maybe a little self limiting ...the Chinese have bought homes in UK NZ USA Australia Singapore Thailand Maldives Germany France Italy Greece ....

The reasons are simple , most of these countries exported pollution to them when they moved all their manufacturing bases there ...so they are coming to yours to import fresh air for themselves and their families.

Pity it drives the property prices up

Did you examine the wrapper to confirm nicotine gum. I have it in good information that it was Hubba Bubble which is entirely acceptable to chew, and blow bubbles I should add, in that setting.

Obama, the first black American president has been to the PRChina before and has met with CCP dictators in Washington and in several capitals several times at meetings of the G-20, Apec and other global organizations to include the UN.

He has found out what some others know about Chinese supremacist attitudes toward people like him.

More over the nouveau rich corrupt censoring and arrogant tyrant dictators in Beijing actually think and believe the world needs now to bow down to them. And to their pal Putin besides.

The Chinese believe they have a 5000 year old enduring civilization (of dictatorship) that will sweep aside the upstart new kids on the block to become the inevitable global colossus once and for all. .

What goes around comes around so good on Obama and his team.

The self respect is lost. If you believe the gum blowing and chewing culture of USA is a God given right and should be used in every occasion in the event any one would think USA is bowing to any culture.

There are occasions to be casual Camp David etc where one can let go of the ties and tux and chat and there are also world events where the world expects decorum and proper dressing

I guess Obama has been on too many formal nights on carnival cruise ...it's quite appalling the formal night dress code as interpreted there vs the Brits & Europeans who choose

to respect the occasion.

Just be realistic ...USA is not No 1 in everything. There are certainly things they are good at but not everything.

You boyz need to catch up to present times instead of saying what people already know and have known for a very long time. One point you need to catch up on is your erroneous thinking that the US believes it is Number One in everything, so do try to keep up in all of these matters.

Members of this forum well know formal occasions and attire in contrast to informal of the same. People from the West do not need gratuitous and unprompted lectures on these points, nor are the Emily Post advisories welcome.

What would be next on your list of ancient formalities, seating order? How exactly to kow tow?

Of course the CCP Boyz (and some others) are offended. biggrin.png It's completely predictable they should be offended. clap2.gif So try to keep up with me on these points, okay?

They and you (of course) miss Prez Obama's point entirely, which is that the CCP Boyz need to render respect if they expect to receive respect. The racism of the Chinese culture needs to be confronted and addressed, which is the central point of this episode.

The current and newest dynasty of arrogant Chinese emperors in Beijing need to pause and to reflect, not to step out to pompously lecture and scold. The PRChinese need to step outside of their closed and insular culture in to the globalized world, which means less lecturing and more learning, less formal posturing in favor of a greater openness and a cosmopolitan attitude to include becoming a civil society.

Just be realistic ...USA is not No 1 in everything. There are certainly things they are good at but not everything.

USA is apparently No. 1 in not being so anal, obsessive, caught up in others and losing sleep over things like someone chewing gum or how he dresses on a Carnival Cruise line. Phew!!!!!!! Thank the good lord we are happy enough as a society to not get all worked up over stuff like that . . .

Why the incessant need to keep score, especially on silly stuff. No.1 at this, No. 1 at that . . . Who acts that way? Kids on playgrounds keep score and fight over who is No 1. Egomaniac adults driven by deep and pervasive inferiority complexes get all worked up over things like "No, your not number 1, I am No. 1."

In reality, it is all just a bunch of subjective matters of interpretation that only egomaniacs driven by inferiority complexes get worked up about.

Your country could be No. 1 at wealth and yet you could still be a poor, unemployed, unwilling to work loser. Your country could be last in per capita income and yet you could be a billionaire zipping around on your G650 and cruising the Mediterranean on you 350' Luhrs.

The CCP Boyz in Beijing have put the PRChinese that have joined the middle class in the middle income trap. The bogus economics of the past 30 years have propelled the PRC in growth but the growth has been false, as the link below discusses.

The consequence is that the CCP's economy and financial system are a house of cards built on sand and enveloped by bubbles.

The middle-income trap occurs when the policies that help raise countries out of poverty cease to work, but governments refuse for political reasons to adopt different ones. Very few countries ever escape to become rich. For a decade, China slowly ensnared itself in the middle-income trap. After Xi Jinping’s first two years, it remains tightly bound.
Beijing controls the publication of all economic numbers and can continue to insist everything is fine. But if Xi does not quickly move beyond talk to profound pro-market reform, China will not slow or struggle—it will just stop

Btw whoever is Obama etiquette coach needs to tell him it is not cool to chew nicotine gum while he is representing a developed country at an important meeting ...I cannot think of any more polite term except it's plain rude.

Certainly lacking the decorum of a world leader

If you have read my previous posts ...being anal is not my speciality but another of your fellow poster

The reality is the topic is about world leaders gathering and there is an arrogance at times

World leaders don't chew gum and it has nothing to do with wealth ...it's basic manners and decorum

Your posts consist constantly of predictions of China falling ...I am hoping like the rest of the more realistic poster this will not happen

Having 1.3 billion people being refugees and swamping the world system is going to overwhelm everything.

Governments are set up to ensure success of the country and people ...sometimes they will have policy errors and sometimes they get some things right

Being CCP or communist doesn't change that basic requirement of good governance ...they have made some errors along the way and they are also correcting them on the way

In reality I can see Scandinavian countries stepping up next on the world stage to take control after the gradual fall of Asia in the next 30-50 years
