BANGKOK, Nov 24 -- Seven policemen and a civilian have admitted their guilt in charges lodged against them by national police chief Pol Gen Somyot Poompanmoung and approved by the Criminal Court, said assistant national police chief Pol Lt Gen Pravut Thawornsiri on Sunday.

He told journalists that all seven police officers including Pol Lt Gen Pongpat Chayaphan, commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), and his deputy Pol Maj Gen Kowit Wongrungroj had admitted their guilt during an investigation.

The two senior police officers face serious charges including lese majeste under Section 112 of the Criminal Code.

Another senior police officer, Pol Maj Gen Boonsueb Praithuen, commander of Marine Police, is facing bribery and several other charges.

A female civilian identified as Sudathip Muangnual is facing charges of forest destruction and encroachment, according to Pol Lt Gen Pravut.

Two other civilians -- a man and a woman – are still at large, he said.

Pol Lt Gen Pravut said further that another senior police officer Pol Col Akrawut Limrat was earlier found joining the same gang as those two who had just surrendered and admitted guilt.

Wow a Thai to admit guilt! Were they tortured before confession?

More trumped up charges against anyone appointed by the previous democratically elected government. This totalitarian regime will stop at nothing to consolidate their power. Disgusting! :)

Somyot is the most corrupt of them all. Show me any other police officer that has the kind of money he has to "invest" in the stock market like he recently did. These people are a disgrace.

"Pol Col Akrawut died last Thursday after falling from high building after admitting guilt to investigators. (MCOT online news)" People are now being murdered!

I wonder how they selected just these corrupt cops for a purge and left all the others standing. Were they negligent in passing a tythe up the pipe or was it political or both?

I suppose they are familiar with police interrogation techniques and know that the most painless approach is to sign the confession without fuss and retract it later, claiming it was extracted under torture.

Oh, so you were there to witness it?

It's not that clear what they are guilty of.

"Pol Col Akrawut died last Thursday after falling from high building after admitting guilt to investigators."

Nothing fishy there.

All in the name of greed!!

You need poison to get rid of poison ...

But sadly over time rats get immune to poison!!

AMM has some interesting comments on how this is a purge, but not of Thaksin associates directly.

Yes but problem is you'll be heading for a pizza if you comment on such topics ;)

Leave him, her, alone JOC apparently he has inside information as to exactly who was appointed by the Thaksin clone Govt.

We see now that those who he tells us were appointed by said administration are extremely corrupt which only goes to show that those who appointed them support corruption.

But we knew that for did they not cut the budgets of the anti-corruption agencies and attempt to have 25,000 plus cases of corruption forgiven by their amnesty bill.

Which incidentally would have covered and forgiven those that have now been exposed.

No torture needed here!!

After watching a fellow accused "falling" of the rooftop, the rest of the bunch surprisingly became more cooperative!!coffee1.gif

Strip them of every baht that they, their immediate family, and their domestic helpers own,

be it properties, chattels and goods, leave them with only a short to their bodies,

throw them all in jail, not in-active posts, and throw away the keys and maybe, just maybe,

the message will sink in...

I for one am delighted to see red shirt cops getting their just desserts,

While they are at it, not not also get them to admit the Koh Tao killing as well.

Any legitimate corruption bust is a good thing, but I'm still waiting for:

1. Laws mandating transparency in government spending, including the military (excluding very limited, legitimate classified programs).

2. Laws mandating open competitive bidding on all government contracts, including military contracts.

3. Strict, and strictly enforced, laws against conflicts of interest for all government people, including those in the military.

4. Regular assets disclosures, including sources of wealth, for all government people, including those in the military.

5. Relaxation of libel and slander laws so the press can fulfill its proper function and report verifiable facts, even facts that embarrass the rich and powerful, without fear of retribution.

Even though I oppose military government, I will applaud any government that brings about these changes. However I'm not holding my breath.

Won't be long before the military replace the police.

I very much hope that you're wrong, and I very much fear that you are right.
