Michael Brown shooting: Ferguson jury reaches verdict

(BBC) A grand jury has made a decision on whether to charge a Missouri police officer over the death of an unarmed black teenager.

His family confirmed that the jury's decision is expected to be announced later on Monday.

Michael Brown, 18, was killed by Darren Wilson on 9 August in the St Louis suburb of Ferguson, Missouri.

His death sparked protests, sometimes violent, as police were criticised for using military grade riot gear.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has declared a state of emergency in the area and called in 400 National Guard troops in anticipation of protests, should charges not be filed in the case.

A White House spokesman said that President Barack Obama had urged those who wished to protest against the jury's decision to "do so peacefully".

The news is saying it will be announced at 8:00 PM CST, It's 7:41 right now. 20 minutes.

Announcing that late and withholding announcement makes me wonder if they are gearing up for a backlash from a decision not to charge.

We'll see.

Edit: Officials are calling for "mutual respect and restraint."

Michael Brown shooting: Ferguson grand jury does not indict officer Darren Wilson
Nick O'Malley
US correspondent for Fairfax Media

A white police officer will not face charges over the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager in August.

Amid rising tensions on the streets of Ferguson, a St Louis County grand jury declined to indict officer Darren Wilson, 28, for firing shots that killed 18-year-old Michael Brown, St Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch said.

Brown, an 18-year-old African American, was shot dead after he was pulled over by the Mr Wilson in August while walking down the middle of the road with a friend, Dorian Johnson.

Mr Wilson says Brown leant through his window and attacked him, at which time two shots were fired, once of them hitting Brown's arm. According to Mr Wilson, Brown then ran away, stopped and turned to lunge at him, at which point he shot Brown at least six times.

According to evidence presented Brown and his friend had been earlier stolen cigars from a local store, and Mr Wilson considered them suspects for the theft.

His friend Mr Johnson said Brown was first shot as he fled and was attempting to surrender with his hands in the air when the fatal shots were fired.

Michael Brown protests are scheduled for 83 cities in the US... There are those that are hell-bent on creating racial division in the US, the more violent the better... They foster it, feed it and hope it takes hold like some kind of Arab Spring movement... TPTB didn't get their way with the Trayvon Martin case, so they move on to Michael Brown... If they don't succeed here, next it will be an unarmed, illegal, pregnant latina that gets shot down in the street...

I wonder what Al Sharpton is advising the President?

I kept hoping after he made a complete fool of himself over the

Tawana Brawley case, he would have faded away as a race

baiting moron. Yet he is still around. Sigh......... Hard to

even imagine him advising the President.

Maybe the thinking is that a lot of the crowd will go inside to watch Monday Night Football at 8 pm. That'll leave the anarchists and the out of towners to deal with.

The decision to clear Officer Wilson of any wrong doing was certainly predictable. Hopefully, the couple of haters on this site who kept referring to Officer Wilson as a killer, will take a nap and reflect on their repeated inappropriate posts.

He killed someone so he is a killer! It would seem that he is not a murderer! Which is good! Now the officer hasn't been indicted have they released all the evidence?
